It's Not My Fault

I've been enjoying the new season of the Great British Baking Show recently. I'm not a big fan of having just one episode released each week, but Paul and Prue forgot to ask for my opinion. After the new episode is over, old episodes keep playing until I intervene. All of this means that I have watched bits and pieces of lots of baking.

Last Tuesday we were having leftovers for dinner, and I thought we also needed something good to look forward to with the leftovers. I felt like an apple cake, but didn't have any apples, so I made the next best thing - an applesauce cake. It was delicious, and I was glad that it came out of the pan so nicely. We ate about half, and put the rest in the freezer when we left MD.

On Friday in NJ, it was leftovers for dinner again, and once again I felt like baking something. The first thing I saw when I looked in the freezer was some cranberries, so I chopped them and had a cranberry pie in the oven in just a few minutes. I don't know why it's called cranberry pie, since it's more like a cake, but my grandmother called it cranberry pie and always baked it in a pie dish, so I do the same. I like this way too much, and can't make it again too soon or I'll eat too much of it again. I do have lots more frozen cranberries, though ...

It didn't dawn on me until after I had made the cranberry pie that my urge to bake was probably due to watching too much GBBS. I do enjoy baking but don't do it nearly as often as I used to because it's usually just John and I, and neither of us needs the calories.

But it's not just the fault of GBBS. Derek (Ryan's food-truck friend) sent him a picture of these cookies and of course, he had to send it to me.

Two of my favorite things, apple butter and snickerdoodles, combined into one cookie. I'll be trying these soon and will let you know how they taste.

I hope your week is off to a good start, and has some cake, cookies, or something delicious in it!

  1. Oh yum! Now my stomach is growling. I found cranberries in my freezer and made some pumpkin bread with cranberries and pecans. Now I'm out of cranberries and I haven't seen any in the stores yet! It's time! If I can find some, I may have to make that cranberry pie this coming weekend when the kids will be coming over!

  2. there could be worse things to be doing :) I don't bake often because it would be in the house and then I would be obligated to eat it!!!

  3. Those cookies sound amazing! But I have no apple butter in the house (I will have to remedy that situation).

  4. Yum, you will have to let me know about those cookies! I will be looking forward to a post. I can be a real cookie monster, and that is why I only bake cookies during the winter holidays. My husband likes them as well, but after he eats a couple, they are all mine, and I don't mean that in a good way.

  5. One good thing about working . . . when I bake I can bring half to work! I made M&M bars yesterday, there's definitely a baking vibe in the air.

  6. I think it is "Fall" and the sense of 'lets store up the calories for the winter ahead'. I've noticed I'm much more into baking and making when the temperature starts to drop, not that we can't blame GBBS, but I don't think it is all their fault. I mean the show wouldn't be on the air if people didn't really want to see it...hmm. (12 Perfect scones would be my category).

    1. Now you've got me thinking about baking scones to go with my afternoon tea! The recipe I usually use makes a dozen, but mine are more "rustic" and definitely not perfect or identical!

  7. Mmmmmm. I have a vegan applesauce-cranberry cake recipe that I am now craving after reading this. I like to identify a recipient to share my baked goods with so that I don't feel guilty about eating what I have!

  12. Trying to look away! It all looks so delicious but I don’t bake much for the same reason. Dan will be home for a few weeks in November…I know he can handle the calories! :-)
