Unraveled Wednesday

I had hoped to join Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday today with a completed pair of socks, but it's just an almost completed pair of socks.

The second sock just needs a toe and then kitchenering, but I didn't want to rush and make a mistake. This will be my first pair of completed socks in four years, so they can certainly wait another day! My fingers are itching to get back to my current Hitchhiker, so that's what up next.

I managed to finish two books during this past week. Thanks to Kat's review last week, I downloaded 84, Charing Cross Road from my library, and it was as charming as Kat said it would be. A friend has offered to loan me the followup/sequel, so I hope to read The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street in the near future.

I rarely read mysteries, but I stumbled across Gone to Dust and was intrigued enough to listen. It features an ex-cop turned private investigator, Nils Shapiro, solving the unique murder of a woman covered in dust from multiple vacuum cleaner bags. This seriously compromises the DNA evidence, but Nils is likeable, intelligent, and able to logically reason things out. Both the characters and plot were well-developed, and I liked it enough that I'm listening to the next one in the series, Broken Ice

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I can't believe it's been that long since you finished a pair of socks! I hope you can find the time to finish up that toe today.

I've been on a reading spree in the past week (which you'll hear about in my post today), but I'm about to start a new book called Exciting Times, which is on the long list for the Women's Prize in Fiction. I heard about it from Margene, who said it was delightful, and I can always use some more delight.

  2. Almost done socks are the best! I started the toe of Steve's second sock last night and made good progress through those toe increases! Thank you for letting me know that 84, Charing Cross Road has a sequel! I got on the wait list this morning! Also... a Minnesota mystery sounds like the perfect thing to read for spring! :)

  3. Love your socks Bonny! I, too, can't believe it's been so long since you knit any...but you have been busy with Hitchhikers for sure!! I just requested both Gone to Dust and The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street (like Kat, I had no idea there was a sequel to 84 Charing Cross Road) from my library. Thanks for the recommendations!

  4. I had to do a double-take to notice they weren't (quite) finished! (I'm not so observant in the morning, apparently.) Love them! And I'm happy to get your recommendations on some mystery reads. I'm always looking for good mystery series. . .

  5. Almost done is great progress. Those socks will be finished soon. I read a lot of mysteries, so I will be looking up your recent read. I finished a medieval mystery, Wine of Violence this week, and I started We Begin at the End yesterday. It comes highly recommended, but we'll see. Have a good Wednesday, Bonny.

    1. Gone to Dust was good enough but not great. I hope I haven't raised your expectations unrealistically!

And that is wonderful news about a new Sarah Moss novel! I've been thinking she was the perfect author to write about the pandemic/lockdown. Thank you!

  9. I have a sock of a pair that's crying to be knit...just as soon as I can get the stitches cast on...previous attempts have been a challenge so I'm determined to succeed 'cause what good is one sock? I also loved 84 Charring Cross Rad...it's been a fave for a long time. I think I shall reread one day this year; thanks for the reminder. Cheers~

  10. Based on your review of Gone to Dust, I just requested it from my library. "Nils is likeable, intelligent, and able to logically reason things out. Both the characters and plot were well-developed" Exactly the qualities I look for in a book -- thanks!

  11. I have such fond memories of the February morning I spent with 84 Charing Cross Road (where WAS this book all my life - all OUR lives?!) and yesterday I read The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery. needless to say, I haven't been knitting much ;-)

  12. Those socks are just the thing for Spring. Perfect Creamsockles. Sometimes it is just best to take one's time with knitting. You can enjoy them a little longer. I had no idea there is a sequel to 84 Charing Cross Road. When my overdrive holds stop coming in, I'll add that to it. Feast or famine in the library hold world.

  13. Four years since the last pair of socks? Where did the time go? In fact, wonder that often as of late. I think I steered Sarah wrong...I don't remember calling that book delightful, as the story is quite serious but still a great read. I am also reading through the Women's Prize longlist and I'm reading How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House. It's incredibly sad, but an interesting story nonetheless.
