Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with some finished Christmas knitting and some in progress.

I finished Ryan's Vespa fingerless mitts (Ravelry link) and got them mailed on Monday. We had a lovely conversation earlier this week where he apologized for not coming home for Christmas and didn't want me to think that he didn't want to be with us. I had hardly considered the possibility beyond thinking "wouldn't that be wonderful" but it was still nice to hear. None of us feel safe flying on a crowded plane with new cases at all-time highs and I want all of us to be healthy, well, and alive when we can finally get vaccinated and be together (even though I haven't seen him in person for 14 months). :(

Getting Ryan's gifts in the mail allowed me to make a start on Justin's Christmas hat. I couldn't find the yarn I wanted in worsted, so I'm holding two strands of fingering weight together. I hope I have enough yarn (I wonder if I bought a second skein and it's back in NJ?), and I hope it ends up being warm and like something he wants to wear. He had a second interview for a job that would be almost perfect, so I'm knitting lots of successful job juju into this hat. If you wouldn't mind sending some successful job juju, he has a third interview coming up on Monday, and any good thoughts you can spare would be appreciated.

For a small break from listening to 29 hours of Obama's book, I listened to Owl Be Home for Christmas by Donna Andrews. It's a Christmas cozy mystery, but many of the interesting owl facts scattered throughout the book along with a moral dilemma at the end saved it from being too lightweight and just a run of the mill cozy.

Back in the olden days, you used to be able to carry over some Audible credits, but that is no longer the case. Because of this, I have a bunch that are expiring soon, so I used some to get four books. I think I'll be listening to Midwinter Murder by Agatha Christie first. Nothing like some Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot winter-themed short stories to put you in a cheery seasonal mood!

What are you making and reading this week?

  2. Love those mitts Bonny! They look electric!! And sending all the best job juju for Justin (what a strange time to be interviewing for a job). I'm busy knitting away on some Christmas gifts and reading an Anne Tyler book that I am less than thrilled about...maybe I need to read the Owl book - that sounds like fun and the type of book that appeals to me right now.

  3. I'm sure Ryan wishes he could be with you, and I know you'll be missing him, but I'm also glad you're all being smart and staying put. He's going to love the mitts, and I hope when he wears them it's like you're giving his hands a little squeeze of love.

Sending Justin all the job juju!

  4. It's so hard to be without our families for this long . . . I'm keeping my fingers crossed for next year, for sure. I love the Vespa mitts pattern. I've made several pairs for Brian and Keith over the years. Those stripes look so bright and cheery and perfect for Ryan. And I am sending ALL THE JUJU Justin's way! XO

  7. I am sending all good juju to your family, Bonny. It's tough being so isolated for the holidays, but we must all hang tight, there are tough days ahead. I hope by this time next year we have begun to forget at least some of our misery. I just finished The House in the Cerulean Sea. It was recommended by Carole, and I found it quite charming, and just the kind of read I needed right now. I recommend it.

  8. Aw, 14 months. We are currently at 12 without seeing Zach. He says there are many orphans by him and they will all have Christmas uniquely in Mexico . Covid sae.
I'm knitting mittens, I swear I am. Even though Fireman seems to interrupt every attempt!
I'm reading comic books about cats. So cat humor

  9. This distance is at times, almost and unbearable weight. I am hoping that vaccines will soon be building up our immunity! I like those mitts! Very much! Hmm, I might be able to get a pair of those done between now and Christmas! And boo on the Audible news!

  13. I'm sending lots of job juju for Justin. I love the colors in his hat. The mitts for Ryan remind me of a string of Christmas tree lights. The miles are long and especially this time of this year. In our heads we know staying put is the right thing to do but our hearts tell us differently. So I'll send some hugs to you. May you find that second skein of yarn in NJ.
