Always Carry a Spare

Yesterday I was happily knitting away on my most recent Hitchhiker during our travels down to MD. This helps me to focus on something besides the traffic whizzing past us at 85 mph while John is also driving too fast, but about halfway through the trip, something felt funny. Upon closer investigation I discovered that this had happened:

Somehow the coated stainless steel cable broke and just snapped at the needle junction. I was beside myself because the only extra needles I have in MD are size 8 and I did not want to knit dishcloths all week. The only yarn store less than an hour away is not open on Sunday and John was using the car on Monday. I knew The Loopy Ewe could ship me a needle on Monday, but given the speed of the USPS, it probably wouldn't arrive until next week. Oh, what a tragedy! But then I remembered Amazon. Before I even unpacked, I checked size 3 Chiaogoo needles, ordered them, and will hopefully have them in my hands sometime today.

The stitches are back on the broken needle and all is well (or it will be when I receive my needles). I had one circular in the cart but added another while I was checking out because I have learned my lesson — always carry a spare. Now I'm going to take my tea and sit out on the front porch to wait for the Amazon driver. :-)

Update:

They're here already (at 8:30 am)! My week is off to a pretty good start and I hope yours is, too!

  1. I am usually the person who has a spare of anything, but I don't do that with knitting needles. Maybe I should! That would be a very frustrating thing to happen while you are in the groove. BTW, that Hitchhiker is looking very nice, Bonny. I love the colors. I hope that your knitting needle problem is the worst thing that happens to you this week.

  2. Oh man, I know exactly how you felt! I try not to rely on Amazon too much, but man, it's been a life-saver on a few occasions over the past few months. I'm so glad you can continue with that gorgeous Hitchhiker!!

  3. Well done Amazon!! Yikes, there is a terrifying thought... no knitting needle!

I think this early deliver is the harbinger of a good week! (from this post to the knitting gods, may it be so!)

  4. I have such a love-hate relationship with Amazon . . . but OH BOY! Do they ever come in handy in a pinch, or what???! So glad your needles have already arrived -- and that yarn! Oh, the color is just incredible! XO

  5. Oh noes! That could have been a major tragedy, but I'm glad you could at least use the broken needle to hold your stitches while you waited for the new one. Like Kym, I have mixed feelings about Amazon, but sometimes it's a blessing!

  6. There are a lot of negative things to say about 2020, but this goes into the other pile. Oh, a world in which you can express order specialty knitting needles!

  7. Hooray for Amazon and a speedy delivery! So often it seems that something I don't care about will arrive right away and something I desperately need will take a week or more. I might suggest getting a set of interchangeable needles and keeping them in Maryland.

  8. I have to say, Amazon has saved my life more than once this year ... and I am so glad you've got your needle (and a spare) and you're back to knitting that Hitchhiker!

  11. Well hooray for Amazon. And lesson learned. A spare needle is a great idea. I have them at home but don't often carry them with me. Now I will. Eventually we are going to be able to travel again.

  12. I always have extra DPNs when I travel, but I never thought about the possibility of a circular breaking. I'd probably try to track down a Joann's. But Amazon works, too!

    1. This is the first time I've ever had this happen with a Chiaogoo needle, and it will probably never happen to me again, but I'll be ready with a spare if it does!

  14. I have busted many needles in the same place and they are always replaced by the company I bought them from (handsome fibers) they have excellent customer service.

  15. I have also learned this lesson. I have numerous DPNs in the size I use for socks and an interchangeable set of circulars which have 2 of each size I use most often. When loosing or breaking a needle one must be fully prepared. Glad your needle arrived so quickly!
