Unraveled Wednesday
Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with focused knitting on the Sunset Hitchhiker, and a new cast-on. I got an email that the beads I ordered for the Hitchhiker have shipped from Germany so I figured I better get knitting in earnest. Luckily for me, shipping will take at least 3-4 weeks, but I'd like to have it completed so I can sew the beads on as soon as they arrive. I'll spare you a picture because it looks much the same as last week, just more teeth.
There will be a new baby in our family at the end of September so I cast on for a feather and fan baby blanket. This is one of my favorite patterns, but knitting a blanket in the heat and humidity of summer is not. Just imagining a pile of yarn in my lap when it's 92 degrees and 82% humidity makes me sweat and itch. It doesn't look like much so far, with just the cast on, garter border, and one pattern repeat completed, but you know the proverb: a baby blanket of a gazillion stitches begins with the first row.
I finished A Good Neighborhood last week and it was an interesting three-star read for me. It proceeds very slowly for the first two-thirds of the book, but the last third is a fast-paced page-turner. I'm still listening to The Splendid and the Vile, and have added several more enticing books to my virtual pile - Song Yet Sung and Deadliest Enemy. I couldn't resist the last two books when Eileen described Song Yet Sung as one of the best books she had ever read, and Deadliest Enemy has a new COVID-19 specific foreword. I've listened to several of Michael Osterholm's podcasts, and have found him to be honest, reliable, and truthful about what he knows (and doesn't know) about viruses. I was glad to find a good science-based source for both education and practical information.
What are you making and reading this week?
Oh, you are such a loving family member . . . to knit a baby blanket in the heat of summer! What a lovely treasure that blanket will be. I've been doing a lot of reading, but I haven't updated Goodreads in a long time (I blame summer), and I forgot all about my Bingo card (oops; I'll have to dig that out). I've been knitting -- just finished a baby sweater (much easier in the heat than a blanket!) and now I've begun the body of a cardigan for me (so many, many more stitches. . . ). Stay cool, Bonny!
ReplyDeleteFeather and fan is one of my favourites too. Hopefully you will get some slightly cooler day to get some knitting done! I added Song Yet Sung to my list too - not sure when I will actually get to it as my Goodreads TBR is out of control! They need to stop publishing for a while so I can catch up!
ReplyDeleteSo many good books, so little time!
DeleteI love feather and fan it reminds me of my mom, that was her go to baby blanket pattern. I have so much knitting to do at the end of the year with my nephew's baby to be and the wedding! I am still waiting to see what color my future daughter in law wants for her shawl (she wants the color to match the bridesmaids).
ReplyDeleteThough I regularly complain about how cold I am in our air conditioning, I am thankful to have it when it comes to my knitting! I hope you get some cooler days to work on the blanket.
ReplyDeleteFeather and fan is such a lovely pattern. I had an afghan in that pattern that my mother made, but it gave up the ghost years ago. Wool in the lap in summer is a bit stifling, but a new baby during all this sadness is very hopeful. I am finishing up The Night Watchman, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. A little shameful US history, engaging character studies, and humor, unexpected humor that made me laugh out loud. If you have not read it, I recommend it.
ReplyDeleteFeather and Fan is such a classic pattern and perfect for a baby blanket. I hope you can manage to knit in AC or something - the next few days/weeks look nasty temperature-wise. I'm still knitting (slowly due to heat) on the same socks and hitchhiker. I did finish "Wild Game" and am now reading "Fair Play."
ReplyDeleteNew baby, new live coming your way in September, so so wonderful! A true devoted Grandma you are to knit a blanket in summer weather conditions.
ReplyDeleteHope you find Song yet Sung as amazing as I did.
I think you will have to crank up the AC to knit that blanket but you know it will be wonderful and so worth it when you see the new baby snuggled up in it this fall.
ReplyDeleteI love Feather and Fan also. It's a classic design. Maybe you will find a few cool days or the AC in order to knit. It's a lucky and much loved baby that gets a hand knit blanket.
ReplyDeleteI just got a email and I can't remember what company sent it to me about knitting a baby blanket in an hour and it looked really soft and cuddly I'll try to find it again any how your plans for a feather and fan are lovely, and I still have a better in family link it that someone needed for me for my daughter 30 years ago .I am reading blogs andTrying to read 5 days at memorial but it's a little rough.
ReplyDeleteThe white yarn agains the green fern is lovely...as will be the knitted piece, I am certain. Thanks for the reading recommends...
ReplyDeleteA lap full of blanket does not sound at all enticing in this blasted heat! (I can barely stand to have a part of a shawl near me these days!) But congratulations on your growing family!
