Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with the return of my making things, weaving in ends, and blocking gumption. I wove in the ends on my Nervous Breakdown Hitchhiker about a week ago, but then it sat, forlornly folded up on the arm of my knitting chair, patiently waiting for my blocking motivation to make an appearance. One day last week I was waiting for John to take a walk with me, and when he said "I just have a couple of things to finish up; I'll only be 15 minutes," I decided to play a game. I know how this usually goes, and the race was on to see if I could get the Hitchhiker soaked, blocked, and pinned out in John's "15 minutes".

And I did because this particular 15 minutes lasted well over an hour and a half. I could probably have been more precise, but I did manage to get all of the 59 points pinned out and I was happy not to let blocking perfection get in the way of good enough.

It's big, bright and the yarn was a lovely, colorful gift from Ryan, so I love it. It will keep me warm and happy in the fall and beyond.

I'm still working away, slowly but surely on the Sunset Hitchhiker. I've stumbled upon some gorgeous lampwork beads that I think would look absolutely perfect sewn on the ends, but the artist is in Germany, and Deutsche Post is not currently shipping to the US. That is an incentive for me to keep at it, as I've made a deal with myself that I can pay for very expensive UPS shipping from Germany, but not until I'm done knitting.

I have finished Apeirogon and am convinced that it will be the best book I read this year. It's stunning, with a beautifully written story, and unlike anything I have ever read. It defies description, so the best thing I can say is that you should need to read and/or listen to it yourself.

I've received my own copies of Poetry of Presence, The Summer Book, and The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly so I'm enjoying some reading immersion in these "real books"The latter was described as a Korean Charlotte's Web (one of my all-time favorites), so I'm going to find out for myself.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Your finished Hitchhiker is gorgeous! And I love how you jumped on the opportunity to get it pinned out while you were "waiting."

I can't wait to read Apeirogon - I'm on the waitlist on overdrive and just checked my status.. only about 12 weeks to go! :p

    Have a great week!

    1. Thank you, Katie! This one was a real pleasure to knit. I was also on a long wait list for Apeirogon and finally gave in and bought it from Audible. I do hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  3. Nervous Breakdown is so gorgeous Bonny! Love the pops of color in it and wow! 59 points is a lot. The Sunset Hitchhiker is really pretty too and I imagine the addition of beads will be lovely. I'm curious to hear about the Hen book!!

  4. I LOVE the Nervous Breakdown Hitchhiker! The colors and the striping worked out just perfectly. It'll be such a treat to wrap that around yourself on chilly days. (And . . . Tom is a master at stretching "15 minutes" into nearly ANY length of time, too!)

  5. I laughed to hear your description of time estimates and husband time. My husband also applies this to greater blocks of time, like hours and days. LOL I love both of your Hitchhikers, and I think you will appreciate that yellow even more in the fall. I am about to start reading Apeirgon this week as soon as I finish up a couple of books I have started. Not crafting much, too busy baking bread, cooking, and doing chores around the house, but hopefully I will find time to get back to it. Have a wonderful Wednesday, Bonny.

  6. I think John and my daughter have the same sense of time (though in her case, it's more like "one minute" is an indefinite amount of time!). Your Hitchhiker is magnificent! I love the stripes -- they're almost like a psychedelic rainbow. And I'm looking forward to seeing the lacy one finished as well.

I think you may be right about Apeirogon having the potential to be the best book of the year. It feels a bit premature to say that when we're not even halfway through, but it really was a stunning piece of work.

  7. Bravo on that magnificent Hitchhiker!! It is brilliant and I love the stripes! (and I am nodding my head at your thoughts on Apeirogon - absolutely!)

And in the way of true confessions... I fear I measure time like John does, lol. And Steve will soundly confirm that! Ha

  10. Nice work Bonny! The hitchhiker is gorgeous. I've put Apeirogon in my queue but didn't pull the trigger yet. I will certainly read it this summer. Did you listen to it?

  11. Your Nervous Breakdown is my favorite of all your Hitchhikers! Nothing else I've read this year, so far, as come close to Apeirogon. I have a feeling it will stay at the top of both our "best of" lists this year!

  12. need to tell Allison about Apeirogon. Your hitchhiker is lovely! and Im glad you are keeping it. I just finished a baby dress and am giving it to my neighbor. She wATCHES HER Granddaughter a lot. I can't bear to send it ups and have it get lost. Too many issues. bad history!
Im readying the Girl who Drank the Moon....a fairy tale. Starts out severe, then gets entertaining

  13. Ha! I know that fifteen minute?! wait as well. Gorgeous hitchhikers - both blocked and the one in progress. That Nervous Breakdown has lots of memories knitted into it and will be such a bright spot next winter. Sometimes one just has to have real books. I hope you enjoy them all.

  14. I love the colors of your shawl! They're so cheerful!

I read The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly a few years back. I understand the comparison to Charlotte's Web, but think a closer comparison would be Animal Farm. I'll look forward to hearing what you think.

    1. Thank you! I haven't finished Hen yet, but am searching for any substantive Charlotte's Web similarities. I can see your Animal Farm comparisons, though!
