Thanks to Ravelry, I could see that several actually meant that I started these socks 10 years ago! That is an embarrassingly long time so its high time to get these done.
One sock is done except for kitchenering the toe, and the second one was about halfway down the leg. I finished the leg on the drive down to MD on Sunday and despite making multiple mistakes on the heel flap I finally got that sorted out by the time we reached south Jersey. I was happy to discover that John's truck, a Honda Ridgeline, happened to come standard with a yarn and counter compartment.
The heel is now turned, gusset stitches are picked up, decreases are done and I'm working on the foot. I love the yarn, love the pattern, and hope to follow Sarah's and Vera's examples of getting these socks done quickly.
Reading has taken a back seat with the deadline knitting, but after reading an NPR article about the Youth Media Award winners and nominees, I added a bunch of these books to my Goodreads list. There is so much more diversity and breadth represented than when I was working in elementary and middle school libraries, and that is a wonderful thing. I'm looking forward to reading these books when I've finished the socks and am back to non-deadline Hitchhiker knitting.
What are you making and reading this week?
Your sister will be so excited by her socks! I'm guessing that with all the time that's passed, she's probably forgotten that she asked for them, so they'll be a big surprise. I find that once I get to the gusset decreases, the rest of the sock seems to fly, so I predict you will finish up that second sock in no time!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sarah that once the gusset is finished (including the decreases), the foot of the sock tends to fly. Those socks are so pretty (love that blue) and your sister will just love them I bet! How nice of John to get a truck that accommodates knitting!! LOL
ReplyDeleteThose are really nice, isn't the Blueberry Waffle pattern a fun one! I think your sister will be very happily surprised.
ReplyDeleteLove the color of that yarn! Socks are a knit that I always have on my needles, but rarely knit them in a timely fashion. I always come down with second sock-(itis).
ReplyDeleteI am so enjoying this Unraveled Wednesday group, the knitting, and the books! I am back into reading everyday!
That is a gorgeous sock, Bonny! Such a beautiful color -- and I am a total sucker for any type of waffle-knit design. And I love that John's truck is so knitting-friendly. I'm definitely going to look for that feature when Tom starts shopping for a new car. (Which won't be anytime soon. But still.) My knitting? The never-ending gray cardigan, I'm afraid. And I'm reading Fleishman is in Trouble. (I don't know how I feel about the book . . . but it's making me laugh out loud, which is always a good thing. Even if the characters are annoying.) XO
ReplyDeleteI love that yarn! The color is so rich - and that waffle pattern is really perfect for socks! But, the best thing might just be that standard yarn and counter holder! I think all vehicles should be similarly equipped!
ReplyDeleteThose socks are beautiful, it's a great combination of yarn and pattern. Good for you for picking them up to finish for your sister's big birthday! I'm reading Case Histories and I'm a bit confused at the moment but I think I'm going to love it.
ReplyDeleteI do love a waffle weave sock!
ReplyDeleteWell I started this comment and got interrupted. Sigh. I am turning 60 in August. My three closes friends have already turned 60 this year. One had a big party at a glass blowing art shop, where the guests could watch the process while the munched. The next is having a big party where we have to dress like the 1960s, suggest songs from that era for the dj to play and send a note under 60 words about a time we shared. What is this? I am going to have a party: Im invited people to the barn to shovel shit for 60 minutes each. That's my favorite thing right now. Then they can give the horses apples. and your socks are amazing.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was HILARIOUS, Kathy! Most of my friends do the same thing, while I either literally or figuratively shovel shit. I keep telling myself that it is good for the soul.
DeleteKathy, your shit shoveling party is a great idea, and such an original and refreshing change from the other parties!
DeleteYour sister is going to love those socks! The color is gorgeous, and hopefully, she will be very surprised. I re-started my Rikke hat, but got the "brim" done and discovered it was too big, so I will have to start again. I have such a pin head, er small head. Oh well, as we say, it is the process.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to finish up the socks for your sis. I have always meant to try the blueberry waffle pattern. Now that you are knitting the socks in BLUE, I am encouraged to give them a try. I love it when I find a knitting compartment in a vehicle. Why don't all the manufacturers add one?
ReplyDeleteYour sister is going to love those socks! and I'm wondering if one sock is enough to spark some sock-knitting-mojo? for sure they are more portable than a hitchhiker (although I'm not sure those tiny dpn's are all that easy to keep up with). asking because I've been feeling a little bit - not a spark yet, but maybe a flicker of one? - of my own mojo returning. and it's been about that many years since I was knitting a pair a month...
ReplyDeleteLove the sock/s...I've one of a pair left to knit that is now on my Gideon Method list, as of today. Not sure where it ranks, tho... Your sis will love and treasure this b'day gift...
ReplyDeleteCheers~
Your recipient is going to love that cozy, gorgeous pair of socks! I am knitting self-striping fingering yarn in a bold and bright colorway (think spring).
ReplyDeletehappy birthday to your sister! Lovely lovely socks and that heel is perfection. I could never ever ignore any birthday because of CAKE.
