Three on Thursday

I'm joining Carole and friends for Three on Thursday, today with three recipes I'm going to make, as soon as I find the ingredients.

Not Sprouted Wheat Bread, just a loaf of whole wheat that I baked

First up is Mushroom Millet Soup. The Yarn Harlot posted this on Instagram and it sounded good to me. I also want to be able to tell John that we're having birdseed soup for dinner. I've searched grocery stores in NJ and MD and the health food store in NJ, but couldn't find millet at any of them. It looks like I'll be ordering some from Amazon.

Next is Sprouted Wheat Bread. Reader and faithful commenter Becky left a comment last week that she had learned to bake bread from sprouted flour and enjoyed it immensely. I have never heard of sprouted flour, so I was curious and wanted to give it a try. I looked at all the grocery stores and the health food store when I was searching for millet, but there was no sprouted wheat flour to be found. I know I can order this from King Arthur Flour, but I had hoped to avoid ordering and shipping flour. When I finally have some sprouted flour, maybe I'll also try Sprouted Wheat Vanilla Chai Bars!

Last is a Caipirinha. It's the national cocktail of Brazil, made with cachaça (sugar cane liquor). There is a bar in Fort Collins that mixes a delicious caipirinha with real cachaça, but the liquor is hard to find in the United States. I've had them made with rum but I think that's a poor substitute. The last time John was in Brazil, he even brought me a muddler to mash the lime and brown sugar together, but it's just not the same without cachaça.

Soup, bread, and a delicious drink, what a meal that would be! What are you cooking, baking, eating, and drinking?

Be sure to visit Carole for more Three on Thursday thoughts.

  2. Sounds like a perfect meal to me! Beautiful bread, BTW! It always feels like a gamble at high altitude...

    1. Luckily for me, I do most of my baking on the east coast. I've tried making bread at my son's in CO, and the rise wasn't nearly as successful. There would be a learning curve for me to be able to bake there.

  3. This sounds like a most excellent meal Bonny! As for me I am making magic with leftover today... in which I disguise them enough that Steve won't recognize them, lol!

  4. Can't find millet? Can't find sprouted wheat flour? Bummer! I hate it when I can't find ingredients I want. If you have a Whole Foods or a Sprouts, you should be able to find both. I would recommend ordering sprouted wheat flour from Lindley Mills or another online source where you can get it at a reasonable price including shipping. You can also use any sprouted wheat flour, including sprouted spelt. It is expensive, but it shouldn't break the bank! Maybe someone in your neck of the woods can suggest a good source. I like the taste of sprouted wheat (less bitter, much sweeter), but I also like the ease of making it. It proofs very fast, so I can start it in the afternoon and have it done by suppertime. I also suggest using a recipe the first time. It is very different from using regular flour. Your WW loaf above is beautiful! I have never had the drink, but it sounds wonderful.

  5. Oh my! Everything sounds so delicious Bonny!! I know Bob's Red Mill has millet...so maybe a Whole Foods or Wegman's? Not sure. I know my local stores carry Bob's Red Mill items, but not all. I know from person experience that King Arthur has speedy delivery!! (Love telling someone you are having bird seed soup - so funny!!)

  7. I remember Vicki posting about that Brazilian cocktail a while back, you might want to ask her about sources to make it authentic.

  8. Now you've got me wondering.... I feel like millet is a common ingredient on the baking aisles of our grocery stores.... or does it sound so familiar because it's in the birdseed?? Your bread looks fantastic!

  9. Smith would not have anything to do with birdseed soup and there will never be sprouted wheat in my house, plus the DABC (liquor control) wouldn't have anything as exotic as cachaça. I want to hear about your exotic meal when you can pull all the ingredients together.

  10. I like to do my "research," so I was making caipirinha prior to visiting my sister in Brazil (7 years ago!)... but it was pretty amazing to have one while sitting on the beach at Copacabana!! Annie brought me a bottle once... I remember she said that you could buy it ANYWHERE and there was a wide range of quality. I was just asking for cachaça at the one grocery store liquor department where I used to get it but they're not carrying it anymore. So, I guess I'll just have to visit my go-to liquor store!

  12. All sounds good. I'm eating lightly these days as I've had an upset stomach ---too many veggies?

  13. I always think we can "find anything" ... and I had no idea there were hard-to-find ingredients like sprouted wheat or millet (I will totally believe there's a Brazilian liquor we can't buy here). I'm going to check our Sprouts the next time I go. (do you have Sprouts?) stay tuned...

  14. Your bread looks amazing. I have always been able to cook a meal well. I have failed 3 times in the last 3 weeks. I swear it is the quality of meat around here. Im ready to spend a week on cooking vacation and just order in . Or eat cereal. I m sick of thinking about food! But id eat bread every day if I could. My pork in the crockpot was awful.....so bad we threw it out. My stove top ground chicken looked so gross I couldn't eat it. Im all about beans and peanut butter and Cream of Wheat.. Not together....

    1. Three dinners in the bin in three weeks sounds like a glitch. Hope the meal-messing gremlins move out!

  15. Three ingredients I've never tried to find! But you can bet I'll be searching my grocery store aisles to see what I can find! (Not that it will help you in your search, but I always love a good scavenger hunt.) And your bread does look just wonderful. XO

  16. Your bread looks delicious. I can almost smell the heavenly scent of baking bread from Nebraska. Let us know what your husband thinks of birdseed soup.
