Sometimes Monday ...
... is a day to tear out beans. In a sign of slowly-approaching fall, they have slowed their production, and are beginning to senesce, so out they come. Pulling them out is kind of satisfying and there are still some big beans to be picked before the vines go on the compost pile.
It still feels very much like summer outdoors. It's already 80 degrees at 6:45 and the heat index is supposed to feel like 105 later, so I'm starting early. I hope your Monday is also off to a good, productive start, doing something where you can clearly see results!

A bittersweet moment, to be sure. I have plans to do that with my beans this week as well. And, thank you for a new word today - senesce.
ReplyDeleteSenesce was a new word to me too! Thank you. Our bean plants produced almost NOTHING this year! Weird. Fletch has ripped them out and he has now planted some sugar snaps - hopefully things will cool a bit and they will thrive. not today though! Hope your outside chores are finished by now.
ReplyDeleteVery smart to be starting so early, Bonny! I have been starting early lately as well. I hope you have a wonderful Monday.
ReplyDeleteGood idea to get started on your gardening early in the morning! It's gonna be rather oppressively hot here today, too. . . so I'm also headed out for some early chores in the garden. So glad you had such a great year for beans. (I first learned the word "senescence" from a doctor describing my mother's condition. It's a good word. Just not what you want to hear as applied to your mother. . . ) XO
ReplyDeleteI learned a new word. It's going to be near 100 here today and Smith wants to be in the garden and also needs to paint our patio. He's halfway through the painting so may stick with it. I'm happy to be cool inside!
ReplyDeleteWell, thanks to you & Kym, I've learned TWO new words today! ;)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a great idea to get that work done early today.
It seems like it should feel more like fall when the plants decide that their summer is over, doesn't it? Glad you were able to get the outside work done early, and I hope you can be in the air conditioning when the real heat comes through.
ReplyDeleteSmart you are to get early AM chores done and outta the heat! Wicked, it is! I'm doing the exact same thing!
ReplyDeleteCheers~
PS. I hit send before I finished...I too learned a new word! Thx!
ReplyDeleteOh my father in law grew beans on sort of a triangle set up. My husband remembers them as delicious! Our only crop item is one volunteer pumpkin that I'm babying. Oh wait, I have chives and we put them in sour cream for a dip this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI hope I don't begin to senesce too soon! I hope you were able to beat the heat yesterday! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt is getting to be that time in the garden season. For some reason I can never get jazzed about planting a fall garden. I am about ready to pull out the cucumber vines but waiting for a cooler day. Very hot and humid here too.
