It's a Celebration!

I'm tired of crappy news and decided to document some good things. These aren't things that need champagne toasts but if I had one of those party blowers, I would give it a few toots. Feel free to add any of your own celebratory events, no matter how small they might be.

  • We have our first snowdrops! Last week was fairly warm and sunny,so I'm sure that helped them along. It was really pleasant and the sun felt quite nice. It's still winter but I'm starting to see some signs of spring.
  • John has a cold and has suffered with it mightily for what has felt like the whole month of February the past week. That's not actually good news, but the best news is that I haven't gotten it! This is almost a miracle because he's been busy sneezing and generally spreading his virus particles around. I woke up on Friday with a headache, sore throat, and stuffy nose, but I gargled with salt water repeatedly and it only lasted a day. I've also been actively washing my hands, dishes, and wiping things off with antibacterial wipes, so fingers crossed that I don't come down with anything in the next few days.
  • My SiL wanted me to go with her to the Philadelphia Flower Show. I decided to decline the invitation because the last time I went (about 10 years ago), the Convention Center in downtown Philadelphia was so crowded that I could hardly move. Sure, the displays are lovely and the flowers are beautiful, but I was so overwhelmed that I felt like just sitting down and crying. The good thing here is that I said what I thought and clearly expressed how I felt felt instead of giving her a half-assed response and then dreading the trip. I suggested that maybe we could go to Longwood Gardens when it warmed up a little more and see loads of flowers without crowds.
  • I was the executor for my father's will. He died seven years ago, but because of some arcane provisions in his will (and quite frankly, the a**hole lawyer who drafted the will), it has taken me seven years to fully execute his will and satisfy the convoluted financial conditions. The estate checking account is finally closed and I think (hope!) I'm done with this hanging over my head.
  • It was warm enough (53°) on Saturday for me to wash the kitchen curtains and hang them out. It was also windy enough (20-30 mph) for them to dry in a hurry. Clean kitchen curtains and snowdrops are sure signs of spring for me (even though it went down to 15° Saturday night).

I hope you've got something in your life worth celebrating. Break out the party blowers and let me know in the comments!

  1. you have a superpower if you did not get it!! I applaud your immunity and your diligence of sanitizing (it's not easy!). I'm glad you are finally finally done with the will. Your daffodils are ahead of mine, I am a bit jealous.

  2. Cheers to you for not getting sick, saying no, completing a long process as an executor, and having clean curtains (which I thought were bloomers for a minute)!

  3. Thank you, Bonny, for good news. It's there is we look for it, isn't it? It's just so hard some days, but today I am committed due to your post. I actually have several good things. I finally got my trust and will completed. I "think" I have finally closed John's estate. I cannot believe you had to go through that for 7 years! You have all the empathy I can muster for that. I am 2/3 through getting my floors refinished, so close and yet so far - LOL. I got my furnace repaired. Yes, it broke down during floor refinishing and arctic weather. My camellia has bloomed, and it is gorgeous. I had 3 of them before the polar vortex about 3 years ago, and this one is the only one that survived. It is the first time it has bloomed since then. And spring is definitely in the air down here as well. :)

  4. My snowdrops made their appearance last week as well, but they have not bloomed yet! My most amazing and exciting news was that I saw a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers on Sunday morning... they were a glorious sight to behold! Oh... and I got my taxes done over the weekend and I only have the tiniest bit left to do on Steve's! Wooo! But can I just say that the curtains on your line look so beautiful! Steve won't thank you, but I am renewing my "I need an outdoor clothes line" nagging... the squeaky wheel is going to be extra squeaky this month! HA!

  5. I'm laughing over Sarah's Bloomer comment. LOL. But, your curtains do look great blowing in the breezes...well...gale force winds we had. And yay for not getting sick. Yay for saying no when you want to (I will say the only times I've been to Longwood Gardens it's been super crowded, but I'm sure not as crowded as the Flower Show). You saw on my blog that our daffodils are finally poking through. I have not seen our snowdrops yet, but hopefully before too long. Only 16 days till Spring and that is a very good thing.

  6. I understand completely what you went through with your father's will. I had to take care of my mother-in-law's estate and it also took me years. For some reason she named every item she owned and who it was going to go to right down to the holiday wrapping paper in the attic. She included things like "the blue boy painting" and a "Chinese vase". I had to get every item appraised even though they were dime store knock offs. What a nightmare. The worst part was when she gave away some of the things before she died and I had to go looking for them to document them. I thought I would lose my mind. It took me years to resolve and there is still an ongoing dispute with a life insurance policy she took out. They won't tell us who the beneficiary is and since we can't give them the info they want not knowing who it is, they won't pay out. It's crazy.

    1. I'm sorry you had an even crazier time with your MiL's estate! In the beginning I swore that the paperwork and all the crap I had to do was meant to distract me from grief over my father's death, but as time wore on, I realized it's just so lawyers, life insurance, the courts, etc. can make some more money on the whole thing. What a racket!

  7. I love those snowdrops! And I bet your kitchen smells amazing with those line dried curtains hung back up. I used to love the Boston Flower Show but they haven't done it in years and I miss it.
