Unraveled Wednesday: 12/18/24

I'm joining Kat and the Unravelers today with an FO - the completed Sparkly Hitchhiker. I was especially pleased with the finish since I feel like I won a gold medal for yarn chicken. I bound off with just 12 inches left, not enough for another row so I used every last bit of yarn possible.

Ryan and John were in the room when I finished and while they didn't give me a standing ovation and break into applause, I know that you guys get it.

This Hitchhiker has 56.5 teeth and is 79 inches long. I love to make my Hitchhikers long enough to wrap around my neck a couple of times, and because it's sparkly, I'm sure this one will be the perfect addition to my New Year's Eve attire. I will most likely be at home, but I'll be sparkly and warm. The photo above is one I took accidentally while I was getting up from arranging the Hitchhiker, but I like how it shows the sparkles so I couldn't just delete it.

This is the 29th Hitchhiker I've knit, which sounds a little obsessive (even to me). What can I say, Hitchhikers are my comfort knitting, so I almost always have one on the needles. Except for now! While I was looking for a pattern for fingerless gloves for my Tunis skein, I came across a hat that spoke to me. I've knit something for everyone except John for Christmas, so as soon as I finish typing here, I'll be casting on a Westerly hat (ravelry link) for him. He'll probably say he's got enough hats but the cables and braids called to me and it looks like it will be a fun knit.

I read four books this week, so I'll post about them separately on Friday, but I'll be back tomorrow with A Gathering of Poetry.

What are you making this week?

  1. Congratulations on another beautiful Hitchhiker! That's also a massive yarn chicken win! I love the hat you've picked out for your next project and the cables should look extra plump in that yarn. I have cast on a new hat that I've foolishly decided I can finish before we leave on Saturday and I'm swatching for my next sweater, but I need to get serious about planning what knitting to take with me on our trip. We did discover a yarn store on our last trip, but I don't necessarily want to have to buy yarn.

  2. A sparkly finish just in time for sparkly season!! And I think that winning yarn chicken by 12" is an olympic task... Gold Medal for you! What fantastic form, what great style... and did you see her level of courage as she ended with a mere 12 inches of yarn?!

I wonder what the knitters anthem is... it should be playing for your time on the podium! XO

  3. I love the Sparkly Hitchhiker -- and especially the seredipious "mistake" photo you took of the sparkles. It's such a treat to actually SEE the sparkly-bits in a photograph! I really like the hat pattern you've selected for John, and may just knit one for Tom (if I ever pick up any knitting needles again . . . it seems I've totally run out of knitting-gas). And I AM giving you a standing ovation for your knitting finish and yarn-chicken WIN!!!! BRAVO! BRAVO! I don't know that I'd have been able to stand the suspense of that last row . . . XO

  5. Oh boy, YAY for winning yarn chicken!! That's amazing. I love that new (29th!!) Hitchhiker... I have still to make one. My knitting mojo has been ho-hum lately, but some mindless, comforting knitting (like a Hitchhiker) usually helps.

  6. As I recall, you are always a Top Ten yarn chicken placer, Bonny! Congrats on another win. You obviously have good focus at the end of a knit. I truly believe that knitting is for comfort unless you live in the Arctic, then I guess you have to be practical about your knitting. ;) So, I say you cannot have too many HHs. And you cannot have too many hats as they are a high loss object in my experience. I read today that you live in one of the happiest states in the US.

    1. I felt surprisingly calm while I was binding off! I figured the worst that would happen was that I ran out of yarn, had to take out the cast off row and the last row and just bind off from there. But that wouldn't have made quite as spectacular a finish!

  8. I love that sparkly photo, especially because sparkles are so hard to capture in a photograph! Go you on your 29th hitchhiker! That's quite a game of yarn chicken you won, too!

  10. A very pretty hitchhiker. They are fun to make and I should put another one on the needles as it may be just what I need to get my knitting mojo back. Though I do have another of her patterns on the needles that I need to get back, maybe this weekend I will pick that up and work on it.

    1. Thanks, Suzanne! Hitchhikers have always worked well for me to help recover lost or hiding knitting mojo. I hope one of Martina Behm's patterns works for you!

  11. Did anyone other than me notice how the sparkly Hitchhiker mirrors those tinseled trees?! (I'm sure I'm the only one who had those two posts to scroll through today!) I'm not sure about the tinsel, but I LOVE the sparkles and YOU wearing it! Can't wait to see what yarn you choose for #30!

  14. Wow, what an incredible hitchhiker. I love the way the colors played out. It's perfect for New Year's Eve even if, like me, you are warm and toasty in your flannel nightgown sipping a warm cup of something, And congratulations on that game of yarn chicken. Spectacular finish.
