Unraveled Wednesday

I'm joining Kat for Unraveled Wednesday, and am especially excited because I've finally finished the Drachenblut Hitchhiker!

It's ~95 inches across in wingspan, so a little difficult to photograph, but it's done and I'm happy with it. Now all I need is some much cooler fall weather so I can wear it.

Last week I also finished three books. Two were four-star books for me, No Cure for Being Human and Everything Happens for a Reason. These are both memoirs written by Kate Bowler who was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer at age 35. I especially appreciated Bowler's candid assessments of some of the lies and platitudes fostered by religion, as she is a person of faith and teaches at Duke Divinity School. She can write about religion without being overly religious.

The third book was Bewilderment by Richard Powers, and I don't think I'm his primary audience. I liked individual parts of this book, but as a whole I was underwhelmed. The writing is lovely, but I found myself wondering what much of it meant. This book was only 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 for me.

I was in the process of reading Matrix, our current Read With Us book, but Overdrive whisked it back before I finished it, so now I have to wait a month for my hold to come up again. That's probably for the best as I will be able to remember more if I read it closer to our discussion in January.

What are you making and reading this week?

  2. Oh my! That is just stunning, Bonny! I love the colors! Well done!!

I am off to find those Kate Bowler books... and I am contemplating giving up on Bewilderment because I am just lost as to where this is going.

  3. Love this Hitchhiker! The stripes really glow!

I really loved Bewilderment, but I can see how it's likely a book that you either love or don't really care for. Maybe I connected with it more because I have a child around the same age who has her own struggles.

I am focused on packing for my trip today but hope to have some time to knit on my Shifty, and I started reading Klara and the Sun yesterday. I'm about a third of the way through and still don't know what to think about it.

  5. What a lovely HH, Bonny. I'm glad you decided to include the red stripes. I haven't been reading anything that is great shakes lately. I have a lot of books on hold at the library, but it will be a long wait. I am looking forward to cooler temps here this weekend. It's been hot here lately.

  6. Wow! Your hitchhiker is gorgeous! I started Bewilderment, but quickly decided it wasn't for me. I'm currently reading Caste by Isabel Wilkerson and Pride by Rio Zoboi, both books are very good so far. I'm on the hold list for Matrix.

    1. Thank you, Debbie! Bewilderment sure wasn't for me either. I'm waiting for my turn for Matrix again, so I'm looking for something good to read and knit!

  7. That Hitchhiker is stunning! I have Bewilderment on my Kindle now and I read Matrix last week. I needed a palette cleanser, though, so I'm currently reading a cozy mystery.

  8. LOVE your Hitchhiker Bonny. It is just stunning with the stripes. I, too, am wishing for cooler weather. Remember to put your kindle in airplane mode after you download a book from Overdrive...then it can't be whisked back until you take it off airplane mode!

  9. that Hitchhiker is gorgeous - the stripes really make the red in blue pop! I've been a fan of Kate Bowler for a while; she's such a "delightful human". I also enjoy her podcast - and Stanley Tucci is her guest this week. He's another delightful human in my book, and the two of them together are magic.

  12. That Hitchhiker turned out so beautifully, Bonny! I love the way the stripes worked, in the end. You're going to love wearing it . . . someday. When the weather is cool again. :-)

  13. This might be my favorite Hitchhiker yet! We're having cool weather and you could be wearing it today! I have to say Bewildered was aptly named as I was totally bewildered by the book, the ending and, well, what!?
