Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for the first Unraveled Wednesday of 2019.

That's the beginning of a Sockhead Cowl. I knit one for Justin last year, and it's a simple design that can be worn in many ways, and keeps the wearer warm in all of them. As a long stockinette tube with four inches of ribbing at each end, it isn't the most exciting knit, but I'm loving the round and round repetitive meditative knitting right now. The only issue I'm having is that the yarn is a very deep, dark purple, and I can hardly see to knit it at night, even with a bright lamp next to me. But I have an idea for a delicious nighttime project that I hope to cast on this evening.

In addition to my slow read of A Place in the Woods, I'm also reading Influenza. I started it because I got into a discussion about the value of getting a flu shot, and while it's frightening reading, it is better to know facts. It does make me want to spend the winter safely ensconced in my house and not be part of any crowds, but since that isn't practical, I'll wash my hands, and hope that antigenic drift and shift don't create a virus as deadly as they did in 1918.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I love that deep rich yarn! It is gorgeous!

I am listening to Washington Black and am just enthralled with every word! It was a long wait on Overdrive, but so worth it!

  2. I read an article that said the flu shot is the reason we have had no world wide epidemics and that everyone should get flu shot for that reason. Let's hope that's true. I, too, love your project bag!

  3. Love the yarn AND your project bag (you have the BEST bags). That Influenza book sounds too scary for me to read - lol. I did get a flu shot this year.....

  4. That Sock Head cowl is a very practical knit and I bet it's something Dale would like to stay warm while hunting. I love your project bag fabric! SO cute!

  5. My great great grandfather had four daughters in his second marriage, after my gg grandmother died, and two of them died in 1918 at ages 17 & 19 -- it seems pretty likely as a result of the "flu." I've always wanted to read more about it!

  6. First off . . . THAT BAG!!! :-) Second . . . I can't read books like Influenza because they completely freak me out, and then I can't sleep at night. So. I will look forward to a quick summary of the highlights from you so I can be more informed, but not freaked out. (I get a flu shot every year.) Third . . . I can't wait to see what your "delicious" nighttime project might be!!! And lastly, I'm reading Milkman, which is slow going but very unique (I can see why it won the Man Booker this year). XO

  7. That project bag is so cute. I read a book about the epidemic in 1918 several years ago - The Great Influenza by Barry. It was a well written history. I get a flu shot and avoid crowds as much as possible. This is the time of year for delicious evening knitting so keep us posted. I finished The Hello Girls - fascinating story about telephone operators of WW1 and their 60 year struggle to be recognized as Army veterans.

  8. That sounds like the perfect meditative knitting to do while reading (or listening to) a good book!

Influenza sounds like a book that would completely freak me out. I'm already a germophobe and am a bit obsessive about handwashing!

  9. I crave simple knitting these days, and so I love the idea of a sockhead cowl. Influenza sounds like a great book. I'm trying to remember to use hand sanitizer if I can't wash my hands. That is a work in progress....
