Bits and Pieces

I think I've blathered about most of my experiences in Fort Collins, and there are just a few remaining bits and pieces to tell you about. I'm going to squeeze all the blog fodder possible out of this vacation!

I love visiting at this time of year because I get to see Ryan's gorgeous clematis. His looks better than any of mine, and I often wonder how someone who doesn't care one bit about gardening has such beautiful flowers. This one clearly thrives on neglect!

Ryan also had some raggedy, hail-damaged hostas that took me a little while to figure out since we don't often get hail here. He had another hail storm after I left, and said the leaves are really tattered and full of holes now.

We always enjoy great cheese and charcuterie at The Welsh Rabbit, but we did pass on the Spanish cheese rolled in ants, sub insectum, and crickets.

And lastly, there was this delightful encounter in the Denver airport.

I don't think the woman in the pink shirt is from CO, as I haven't yet met a rude Coloradoan. I was sitting behind her at the airport, and she loudly announced that she was "hungry for something a fat girl would eat". Then she turned around and asked what I was eating. I know I'm not thin but I really don't need a rude stranger to point this out to me. I tried not to accidentally stab her with my knitting needles. :-)

And that's it from Colorado!

  2. Those Clematis are stunning! And, I am with you... I would pass on anything that included bugs!

As for the rude pink-shirted woman... may her Karma-balancing event come swiftly and be most memorable for her.

  3. My neglected clematis has 3 mockingbird chicks being fed by 2 diligent parents.
I might eat crickets and ants if they were doused in really good dark chocolate.
Well, I had a bunch of retorts for pink lady, but I had better watch my manners.

    1. My grandmother always thought that if birds built a nest in your plants that it was a blessing from a departed friend or family member. I don't know where she got this, but I like to think it's true, even if the nest means you have to neglect your clematis. :-)

  4. Like Annette, I need to mind my manners on your blog, so my comment about the rudeness will go unwritten...I'm sure you can imagine what my retort would have been - lol.

Ryan's Clematis - WOW!!! Gorgeous. And yup, my little bro in Boulder had that second hail storm as well. And, in fact he texted me yesterday that he had come back from vacation a day early...they had rain, hail and snow!

The bug thing - I almost spit out my coffee when I read those menus - YUCK!!!!

  5. Simple reply to the woman at the airport:

I bow to your experience on the matter as it looks to be vast.

    1. Brilliant! I'm not a quick thinker in situations like that, but I almost hope that someone says something similar to me in the future so I can use your reply!

  6. The Clematis is stunning! I've been thinking about trying one on my patio to hide a bright white wall of plastic. As you know, my hostas look like Ryan's. That's life in the west as it happens every year. The woman in CO must have had the munchies, not that that excuses her behavior. Some people have no inhibitions or filters.

  7. Beautiful flowers, and I didn't think "ants" counted as vegetarian ... but my favorite part is Valerie's comment ;-)

  8. Haha. I had the same thought about ants as Mary ^^! I wouldn't have thought of ants as vegetarian, either. ;) Ryan's clematis is gorgeous.

  9. Yes, rude, but to be the devil's advocate, she probably is so unaware of her behavior that she didn't relate it in any way to your appearance and what she said. People are thoughtless more often than they are malicious, I think. Being malicious requires thought. I probably would have given her the stink eye and said, "excuse me?" just to see if she put any of it together. Bet you would have gotten a blank look. You know, people all over the world eat bugs, and they are going to be the protein of the future if the population keeps growing, so I try to keep an open mind about them. I have read that they can be tasty. Beetles supposedly taste like cashews. I would try them. Can't be any worse than eating shrimp (they are hideous looking) or crawfish. Ryan's clematis is gorgeous. Every time I have tried to grow one, it died.

  10. Ryan's clematis is beautiful. I love that purple blue color. As for the woman in the airport, good grief. Like you I rarely come up with a retort on my feet. Sometimes I just don't reply unless I want to stick up for someone who isn't there to stand up for themselves. The Loopy Ewe shopping excursion looks like lots of fun.

  11. Love that clematis! And I'm sure that woman was completely clueless with her question but...what a way to go through life!
