Every day after John gets home, we suit up with our fluorescent yellow vests, flashlights, and warm clothing to head off on our walk. We tell each other about our days, and sometimes John will ask, "Did you do anything fun today?" Far too often my answer is no, so even though I had a long list of things to get done yesterday (just like everyone else!), I decided fun was long overdue. Before I could talk myself out of it, I headed to Bucks Country Gardens. It's not wild and crazy fun, but it is my kind of enjoyment.
The first thing I saw was the beauty of poinsettias everywhere - red, white, and in between.
Secondly, I was intrigued by these Princettias. They're compact poinsettias, specially bred to branch more and have more flowers. Even if my photo doesn't show it well, they really are much more full. While I've complained about blue-purple dyed poinsettias (especially when they're laden with glitter), I was really smitten by these.
And lastly, I mainly went to check out the Christmas cactuses, and wasn't disappointed. I repotted one of my favorites (with lovely peach-colored flowers) last summer and accidentally killed it. This replacement beauty came home with me,
and this one also. I could not resist all those buds!

ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful flowers - I love poinsettias although I don't buy any these days because I never know what to do with them after Christmas is over. I mean, they are still beautiful but they just don't fit in after the decorations are put away.

ReplyDeleteMy cactus decided to bloom for Christmas this year, first time it's found the right month to bloom in since we moved it from California to Texas. I guess it finally figured out the time difference?

Some of those Christmas cactus buds will probably drop off, but there are a couple of segments with three or four bigger, plumper buds that are farther along, so it will be interesting to watch.

Often - when the weather is cold and nasty and spring seems a long way off - I head out to a nearby nursery. Usually just to wander . . . but sometimes to bring a plant home with me. Such a lovely way to spend the day -- and to refresh your soul. I can't WAIT to see what those buds do on your new Christmas cactus! I have never seen a Christmas cactus DO that. So cool. . .

Now that sounds like my kind of fun! I moved my 60+ year old Christmas cactus to a different room earlier in the summer, and I should have known...no buds this year. Every time I have moved this plant, it fails to bloom that year! I look forward to your Christmas cactus watch!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely day Bonny. Great way to relax. The little/fuller poinsettias are intriguing. And wow with the Christmas cactus! I've had double blooms at the tip of a branch, but have never seen a row of buds like you have. I agree with your comment to Kay T that some will probably drop off, but it will be interesting to see. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWe have a local nursery that does a pointsettia tree and people get their Christmas photos in front of it. Sounds like you added a nice pinch of fun to your day.
ReplyDeleteTen buds! How wonderful! That's the color my cactus should be when, if, it ever decides to bloom again. You did the right thing, not only in heading to some place fun and enjoyable, but a place you could also bring home something beautiful. I will be very disappointed if you don't go back and rescue one of the pink poinsettias. It was so unique and I'm sure it's calling your name!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful poinsettias! I need to repot my Chrismtas cactus too. It's blooms are kinda orange and it's in a red pot and they clash with each other. I'm looking forward to the cactus watch. Can't wait to see what all those little buds do. Merry Christmas!

ReplyDeleteI've never had a Christmas cactus, and yours is so beautiful, I may have to have one. Those compact poinsettias are intriguing. I wonder if they would be less "leggy" over time. My one dislike of them is that they get so leggy and ugly after a while. You picked the perfect activity, Bonny, and your ritual with John sounds perfect. What a lovely way to end the day! I hope you have some fun again today.
ReplyDeleteI've had Christmas cactuses for many years, and since I didn't start any amaryllis this year, I wanted some more blooms for the winter. These are a good, inexpensive way to accomplish that. They're easy to start from cuttings, now if I could just figure out a way to send you some of your own!
Deletemy cactus is blooming too and I love it!! For some reason it blooms without me doing anything. go figure. I tend to kill nearly all of the plants! I walk in the daylight if I walk. Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend if I don't 'see' you!!
ReplyDeleteWow. All of those flowering plants are beautiful. I have been eyeing the poinsettias this year in the stores. I gave one to a friend who lost her Dad around Thanksgiving. The nursery and the yarn shop are my kind of fun too.
