Three on Thursday

Joining Kat and Carole for Three on Thursday.

When I went out for my stroll around the yard this morning, I was looking for things blooming. My mums are still tightly budded, but I did find a few blossoms.

1. One last clematis flower. We dug up this vine from John's grandmother's farm after she passed away and the farm was sold. By my best estimate it's more than 60 years old, and doesn't bloom very profusely even in the summer, so I appreciate this last hurrah in the fall even more.

2.  One last rose. There have been several years where the roses have bloomed even into November, but since things are so dry here, this year is not one of them. I pruned the roses back fairly hard last week, but left this poor bud in hopes it would bloom. I was happily rewarded, and cut the flower to appreciate inside. I think I'll enjoy it more than the deer would have.

3. The third (potential) bloom can be seen in the photo above. I have a big Christmas cactus hanging on the porch, and for some reason the squirrels love to tear down pieces of it. I've got all the big pieces in water to develop roots and replant them, but because this little piece already has a bud on it, I had to keep it in hopes that the bud would open and blossom. The glass that it's in is also from John's grandmother. She called it her sipper, and would have a few sips of wine from it in the evening. I need a bigger glass. :-)

Head on over here to read more Three on Thursday posts.

  2. The last few flowers of summer are always to be celebrated. My Christmas cactus is doing well (despite neglect), but I wonder if I should be feeding it something other than water. I have high hopes for it this year.

  3. Your blooms are lovely, Bonny. I have a few roses left, but nothing else in my yard is blooming. It is so dry here! No rain for weeks. I hope the farmers are taking advantage of it to get the last of their crops in. I can't imagine why squirrels would fool with a cactus!

    1. When we moved in, one of our neighbors put out shelled English walnuts for the neighborhood squirrel population. I think this practice may have produced generations of entitled, spoiled, destructive squirrels, the same ones that have chewed through our roof cornice four times to nest in our attic. They may have a vendetta against me because I don't give them walnuts and exact revenge by tearing up my Christmas cactus. :-)

  4. Such sweet - and bittersweet - flowers! It's nice that you get to see them before they are gone.

  5. The clematis and rose are just beautiful! Hooray for late summer blooms! (I know it's not really late summer but it feels like it around here today.)

  8. I noticed that pressed glass goblet right away! My mother had a nice collection (they were so pretty and relatively inexpensive, once upon a time). I was amazed to run into a (random) HUGE collection/display of pressed glass goblets at UW-Stevens Point when the girls were in school there.

  9. Love your blooms. The rose is gorgeous! I'm so happy to learn that I can rescue the pieces of Christmas cactus I'm constantly knocking off my own. Had no idea I could just put them in water. Duh! I'm SO not a gardener! I have several of 'sipper's that I've inherited too. I use them by the sinks for keeping rings safe, I keep change in one on my desk & there's one in the cupboard that's been holding the last 2 pieces of Christmas candy for about 4 years. I really should throw that out.

  10. Your flowers are still blooming !!! I have a rose mini that took all summer after a transplant, but has a red bloom now. Our clematis apparently like dry weather . When we had inches and inches of rain , the 3 plants looked so dead. Now in the dry cool of autumn I have runners flying up the lattice with blooms! Hooray I think they may make it

  13. I have a few things blooming in my garden, but mostly . . . it's a tired and desperately dry place right now. You've inspired me to go out and take a bloom-inventory. XO

  14. We've got a couple things hanging on too and our mums are in full bloom. There is a volunteer sunflower on our front driveway that I'm hoping will bloom before the frost - we've got a warm weekend ahead so hopefully! And here's to big glasses! :-)

  15. The flowers are beautiful. I love the photo of the rose in the vase sitting on an old quilt. So pretty. I am a sucker for old quilts. The stories they could tell . . .
