I'm happy to join Kat and fellow Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday, with some more Hitchhiker rainbows.
As I knit more yarn and the rows get longer, the rainbows are becoming more of a "suggestion", and not discrete lines of color. I've got 38 teeth and I'm going to finish this ball of yarn and assess the situation then - number of teeth, what the rainbows look like, how big it is, and how tired I am of knitting it. I really like the idea of how this yarn is dyed, but I'm still not sure I love how it looks in a Hitchhiker. It might be a gift if I can think of the right recipient.
And now I'm anxious to wind and start knitting the yarn I bought at NJ Sheep and Wool:
These are gradient sets from Marianated Yarns. The top one is Stormy Skies Ahead and the lower one is Rock Quarry. I realize they look very similar in photos, but in real life, the lower one isn't quite as dark and stark and the skeins have a slightly bluish tint. I couldn't decide between them, so I bought both.
Most of the Hitchhikers I've knit are quite bright, but that poses a small problem when it comes to wearing them. A lot of them are nice to look at but don't go with anything in my wardrobe. Last week I was telling Jane that I had had an idea to knit a gray one that would go with everything (or at least many more things), so that's what I intend to do. I've thought about possibly doing yarnovers when changing colors and maybe adding beads at the yarnovers, but I'll see what happens once I actually start knitting. Who knows, maybe I'll even throw caution to the wind and combine these gradients somehow.
I did a quick re-read of Sorrow and Bliss to refresh my memory before our discussion last night, but other than that, I'm still plugging away with Fairy Tale. I reached the end of one storyline but another bigger one is getting underway. I'm listening to the audiobook, and at 24 hours in length, Stephen King did not take shortcuts in character development, world-building, or storytelling.
What are you making and reading this week?
I think the rainbow Hitchhiker is absolutely charming, and Dee is right -- perfect over a grey (or other neutral) sweater. I really can't wait to see your lovely gradient yarns in action, though. I think they'll make a beautiful Hitchhiker (TWO, actually). Even though knitting-with-neutrals is kinda boring, I'm always glad to have neutral finished-items in my closet. So versatile . . . (Tom is deep into Fairy Tale right now, and he's finding it so compelling he is basically unresponsive!) :-)
ReplyDeleteThe rainbow Hitchhiker is so pretty and FUN. I agree with Dee and Kym that it will look great over a grey sweater...or really, any neutral. And I love your new yarn - a gradient HH will be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kym and Vera... that rainbow Hitchhiker is really fun! (and yes... to pair it with a neutral is a great suggestion!) I like those two gradient sets... and think they will make the perfect Hitchhikers!
ReplyDeleteI happen to really like the rainbows, even if they're just a suggestion, but I can understand how they might not appeal. I think the gradients will be fantastic, together or separate, and though the resulting shawl(s) may not be as colorful as the rainbows, it/they will certainly go with everything.
ReplyDeleteThe Rainbow HH is just beautiful, but then anything with blue just makes me smile. The gradients are my favorites colors from Marian and I've used them for many shawls. You'll have fun planning and knitting with the best grays around. And, you got to see friends! Last night was a great discussion and you had some very good questions about Martha and her family. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI love the rainbow yarn so very much! One of my all time favorite colorways you've used. I have some neutral cowls that I wear ALL THE TIME and I love them!! Sometimes I'm in the mood for a pop of color and other times I want simple neutral. it's nice to have both.
ReplyDeleteI am very fond of gray, and a lot of my closet is gray. I wonder if that means I'm depressed - LOL. Anyway, I love your gradient yarn. I will be looking forward to seeing what you do with it. I think your rainbow HH would be lovely with any number of colors, Bonny. All that color often looks really good next to a face. Reading a draft copy of Patricia Finney's new Robert Carey book and wishing it was a "real book" instead of a draft.
ReplyDeleteI like the rainbow colors in your Hitchhiker and I agree with others, it will look great paired with a neutral top. I also like your gray gradient sets and look forward to see how they will work together.
ReplyDeleteI'm almost finished with a grayish Musselburgh hat and need to get back to work on a gray lacey scarf that I want for later this fall.
I enjoyed our discussion last night and I want to thank you, Carole, & Kym for hosting Read With Us!
I must admit I'm feeling a bit more kindly towards the current Hitchhiker with all these pro-rainbow comments! All I need is a gray sweater and it will go with so many of my Hitchhikers. You are knitting with plenty of lovely gray!
DeleteAnd thank you very much for joining us last night! I really enjoyed the discussion and am looking forward to our next one.
Your hitchhiker is cute with the rainbows. I got out early from work yesterday to take my parents to the doctors and came home and just read Apples Never Fall till I was done. I had figured I would finish it by or over the weekend but nope, just read and read.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's a fun way to read!
DeleteI like the way the rainbows in this Hitchhiker change and seem to fade. It's sort of a watercolor rainbow toward the wide end. Very artistic if you ask me. I bet non-knitters will rave about it and wonder how on earth you knit the design. Tell them you are a fiber artist because you are! Those gradient packages are so pretty. I love grays and blues.
ReplyDeleteHm. I think the yellow stripe, especially, is getting lost... BUT, I still really like the overall look of that Hitchhiker! I love your "neutral" palettes.
ReplyDeletegorgeous new yarns and YES more hitchhikers!! I think the rainbow hitchhiker is my most favorite of all you've knit.
