Unraveled Wednesday

It's time to join Kat and the rest of the Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday, with my never-ending Musselburgh hat. I've reached the point that knitters sometimes encounter, the one where you knit and knit and knit but there is no measurable progress. The tape measure has shown that I have two more inches to go before I start the decreases for several days now, but I have reached gray yarn so there is some sort of progress being made. I trust that I will knit my way out of the measuring tape black hole soon, and hopefully be able to finally show you a finished hat next week.

I finished a few audiobooks this week. The Yarn Whisperer and Knitlandia were pleasant listens while I went through things in NJ to take to Goodwill. I donated two carloads which is a good start to making room for things that I'll be packing up in MD next week. I also listened to The Guncle, which was a four-star book for me. I was afraid it might be a bit lightweight based on the cutesy title and cover design, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was funny, well-written, poignant, and full of depth and heart. The main character experiences quite a bit of personal growth and I'm a sucker for that in a novel. Up next, The Final Case by David Guterson. I hope it's a good book to listen to while I pack.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Your hat is just plain happy Bonny!! Like a rainbow. Which is perfect on these grey January days. I think I heard about "The Guncle" somewhere and thought it looked like it could be fun. And "The Final Case" - I had not heard about this but thought I recognized the author. "Snow Falling on Cedars" was a gorgeous book, so I'll be curious to see what you think of this one. Two more books to add to my ever expanding TBR list!

  2. The colors of your Musselburgh hat just make me happy! I loved The Guncle, although doubt I would have picked it up (judging a book by its cover . . . ) had Sarah not raved about it first. It was a lovely book -- and not shallow or silly at all. I'm glad you enjoyed it, too!

  3. Your Musselburgh is growing... but I love the idea of knitting ones self out of the measuring tape black hole! YES! This is a common occurrence in sleeve knitting as well!

The Guncle came off hold for me just as I was starting Empire of Pain so I moved my place back. I hope to have it soon!

  4. I am so in love with the colors in your hat! I know you'll get to the point soon where you'll knit one more round and suddenly you'll be past the measurement.

So glad you enjoyed The Guncle! I really loved it and have been recommending it to everyone. It does seem like it will be a bit fluffy but has some surprising depth to it.

  5. You know that adage about a watched pot never boiling? I think that is true with knitting, in my experience anyway. I get close to a change in the pattern, and I measure too often, leading to disappointment. I bet your will reach the decrease point more quickly than you think you will. Your hat is lovely and springy, which is always welcome in the depths of winter. I am anxious to see it on your head!

  6. when I have that kind of long time knitting, I put a clip every time I pick it up so I can see the slow progress, it mentally makes me happier. THAT is one beautiful hat!!!

  7. Those stripes are just so awesome! You'll be wearing that hat in no time, I'm sure. I have The Guncle on my reading list and it sounds like a real treat.

  8. The colors are so beautiful! I really love this color combo. My hat went out for its first walk today and it is the best hat I've found for keeping the ears warm and it staying in place throughout our walk!

  9. I love the colors of your hat! I'm currently reading and enjoying Stanley Tucci's new book, but it is making me hungry! I'm between knitting projects right now, I'm trying to decide between the Musselburgh and the feather hat, but I think either one will be a great project!

    1. Stanley Tucci's book has been so highly recommended by everybody that I finally put it on hold. The hold list is about a mile long, but I definitely want to read it. I think either a Musselburgh or a feather hat would be a fine next knitting project!

  10. Your Musselburgh is divine - gosh I love those stripes! I finished Agatha of Little Neon Monday morning; I want to say it's delightful, but that doesn't feel quite right for a story about so many hard things.

  11. What a happy looking hat. I know that black hole of knitting. The sweater I am working on is going to be a long term project with a long black hole. I haven't read The Final Case but it sounds interesting. May it be just what you need to get the packing done.
