What's for Dinner?

I'm not sure that today's recipe will be anything new for many of you, but it was new to me. I've eaten it plenty of times, at restaurants and at other people's houses, but I've never made it myself. During our last conversation, Ryan strongly encouraged (meaning he basically demanded) that I finally give it a try. With only a few ingredients, he assured me I would be up to the challenge. :-)

I was quite capable of boiling penne, sauteing garlic, and adding a can of tomatoes.

Once the penne was done, I whisked vodka, cream, and grated parmesan cheese into the sauce and let it simmer for a few minutes.

Then I mixed the sauce into the pasta.

John basically considers a meal without meat not worth eating, so I anticipated this and browned some sausage for him to add, which he did.

Ryan says that John is like Homer Simpson, he won't try anything new unless he's had it before. That is pretty much the case, so I also made zucchini bread for dessert to sweeten the deal.

But I was quite happy with penne vodka, and will definitely make it again, no matter what Homer John thinks.

(Sometimes a Yuengling helps take the edge off when I'm dealing with 20 questions about what's for dinner and why does it have vodka in it.)

Be sure and check in with Kym today for her take on why you might enjoy reading and discussing Shuggie Bain.

Also, I've been having some issues with feedly picking up my RSS feed in a timely manner. While I've been assured that the RSS feed has not changed, if you use feedly to subscribe, you might want to re-subscribe with the "new and improved" RSS feed: http://highlyreasonable.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

Or if you don't want to bother, I usually try to post Monday-Friday, fairly early (~6:00 am). I'm not much without you as readers of my ramblings!

  1. Oh yum! this looks so delicious Bonny. I may need to give this a try myself. Penne is one of my favorite pastas too:) It's 7 a.m. and I'm sipping coffee, but I sure could go for a bowl of this!

  2. I burst right out laughing at the 20 questions line! Oh boy. Yep, I live with one such as that as well... his hang up, leftovers. He won't eat them unless they are "remade" into something different. Kind of defeats the point of leftovers if you ask me...

    1. You know, I find that my husband is happy to eat leftovers if he doesn't have to eat the same thing 2 nights in a row. Have you ever tried that?

  3. I love penne vodka -- and that looks like a quick and easy (and tasty) version! Thanks for the recipe - and inspiration. :-)

  4. Mmm, penne alla vodka is one of my favorites! If you feel like changing it up a bit, some diced and sauteed red onion is a good addition (that's how one of my favorite Italian places in Philadelphia made theirs, though they also used rigatoni instead of penne). I know you enjoyed it, but what was John's opinion? Will you be making it again?

  5. I love vodka sauce! Dale is similar to John in the meat-makes-the-meal department. Yuengling for the win!

  6. Rusty is a lot like John/Homer... I'll go even further and say that he could be happy eating/rotating the same few meals with little variation.

  7. I've never made it either because my Homer would not consider such nonsense. :-) I'll bet it was delicious!

  8. I must admit that I have never had this pasta, but I am tempted to try it. My John is just like your John and Homer. He is suspicious of all things new on the menu, while I crave a new recipe occasionally for variety. Your idea for adding sausage for him is very smart.

  10. Penne with vodka sauce is one of our favorite meals ... I hope you find some ways to keep it in your repertoire :-) (our recipe has bacon in it ... would that help?)
