Sometimes Monday ...

... is a day to pay the tax man.

I actually mailed our Federal and NJ state taxes on Saturday. I still have to e-file DE state taxes (John works in DE, but we live four miles away in MD) later today, but I have my fingers crossed that goes smoothly. Luckily, I don't have to do MD taxes this time around because we lived here fewer than 180 days in 2020.

I blame the IRS, NJ, and DE for my procrastination. If they are going to give me an extra month to get taxes done, I'm going to take every available bit of time. I may be in for a rude awakening next year if they are actually due on April 15th.

But it feels good to finally get all the odious taxes done and be able to put away all the multiple folders that have been cluttering my kitchen and dining room tables for months. Now I can do some fun stuff, like making zucchini bread to use up the zucchini in the freezer before John grows more this year, read a few books in my queue, and await arrival of my new yarn. Both Ryan and Justin were very thoughtful and got me yarn for Mother's Day; I was absolutely thrilled! It hasn't arrived yet, but I'll tell you all about it when it does.

I hope your week is off to an auspicious start, with plenty of good things to anticipate!

  1. Doesn't it feel good to know that you are closer to being done? I cheat and pay someone to do our taxes :)

  2. LIke Karen, we have someone else do our taxes. It started when Fletch had his own business and I didn't want to keep up with various laws, etc. Now it is not really necessary, but so easy!! Can't wait to see your new yarn!

  3. I dread doing the taxes every year -- and I don't even do them myself! You have my immense respect for doing them yourself. Even when the return has been explained to me, I still can't make heads or tails of it, so I am happy to pay someone else whatever it costs to do it for me.

  4. I really push to get my taxes done early every year. I hate it when things like that are hanging over my head. I do pay someone to actually run it through a computer program, but I fill out all the forms before that is done. I got them done in February this year! I can't imagine what a hassle it is to do them for multiple states. Can't wait to see your yarn; your boys are very thoughtful!

  5. Your taxes sound very complicated and I am in awe of you doing them yourself. Mine are less complicated, my income comes from three different sources in two states and I pay someone to do my taxes. I'm looking forward to seeing your new yarn...you have good sons!

    1. I think this may be the last year I do our taxes. It's getting too complicated for me, and every year I hope we don't get audited. Paying someone sounds so much better!

  6. I haven't personally "done" taxes in decades - always go to an accountant. This year I have a new one - previous (he) retired - and I think She'll be fine. Whoever does, there's still involvement in the process and as Albert E sez, it's the hardest thing to understand! Glad you're free now to enjoy your new yarns! Cheers~

  7. I have never in my life done my own taxes, so weird, right? And yet I still procrastinate! I delivered them to my tax guy last Monday and he got them back to me on Thursday and we're actually getting a refund this year. It's a May Miracle!

  8. It is always good to get the taxes off. How nice of your boys to send you yarn. I will wait to hear all about it for sure. My son sent me three books about spinning. He picked them out himself and did a fabulous job. My daughter sent me a subscription to StoryWorth. We talked to both of them so it was a nice day.

  9. I was so annoyed when they extended the deadline. Because I do tend to stretch my work to fit any deadline. . . Luckily, we had a meeting scheduled with our financial guys in early April, and I needed the taxes finished (but not filed) in time for that meeting, so I did manage to get them finished (but not filed) by then. Of course, I dawdled and didn't end up filing them until the end of April, and I still haven't written my checks. (If they're going to extend the deadline, I'm definitely going to extend my actual payments. . . ) It feels awfully good to be able to wrap up that chore for another year. . . and you are a CHAMP to file your own taxes with all that coming and going between states!

  10. Yay for getting the most not fun thing off your list! I dread taxes every.single.year. I managed to cross off some of the most not fun things off my list yesterday as well! (scrub the tub is my least favorite thing ever, but it is DONE!)

I can't wait to see your yarn! (that is the best Mother's Day gift ever!)
