We heard several loud explosions on Saturday morning, lost power, then heard the fire and rescue squad sirens. That combination never bodes well, and it turns out that this happened:
There is construction going on in a lot about a block behind us, and the bulldozer operator hit the electric wires, blowing the transformers and blasting two electric poles apart. I still haven't found out details, but I sincerely hope the bulldozer driver is okay.
We were without power for about 18 hours, and I couldn't do any of my planned activities, so I had to spend the day reading, knitting, and facing the hardship of making drinks without a blender. It was tough, but I persevered. We were also without electricity to run the sump pump, and that made for a tense afternoon during some torrential deluges, but we were lucky enough to avoid a flooded cellar.
Our power was back on Sunday morning, so I got to do lots of laundry, make lasagna, turn on the air conditioner, watch some Netflix, and even use the blender. All in all it wasn't a half bad weekend, and I now have completed laundry and a new appreciation for working electricity. I hope your weekend was a good one!
WOW! I hope the bulldozer drive is okay, too. But, WOW! Talk about a bad day at the office . . .
ReplyDeleteYIKES!!! I, too, hope the driver is ok. glad it was no closer to your home. Sounds like you made the best of it!! Here's to an easier week.
ReplyDeleteI hope that operator was okay too! Wow, what a ginormous disaster! And, really... what an awful combination to be without on a hot, humid Saturday!
ReplyDeleteI hope he's okay too! We've had bulldozers all week at work taking a building down. And I am sooooooooo happy you survived without the blender. :-)
ReplyDeleteI so hate losing electricity. And it seems to happen often here (even if only for very short periods of time). And our lines are underground. Altho the ones they connect to are not. The longest we lost power was a few years ago. It went out (due to a freak wind storm) on Friday night at 10:00 P.M. and didn't come back until Sunday at 6:00 P.M. And of course, it was above 100 degrees all those days! Arghhh! But we were lucky - some people had theirs out for a week or more!

Losing electricity really makes us appreciate how convenient it makes everything - especially those blender drinks! What a freak accident, I hope the driver is okay, too.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya! We are currently without power as I type. We had a big storm about 2-3 weeks ago when over half the population lost power, but we dodged that one. The next big storm yesterday afternoon got us. So we have been without power since 2:00pm yesterday. It's nice to forego chores, but then they always wait for us, don't they?! I'm glad you got your power back, and boy, I hope that bulldozer operator is ok.
ReplyDeleteSending you "power-full" (sorry, couldn't resist) wishes that your electricity is restored soon! Chores can wait, and it was kind of nice to be unplugged for a while, but that may have been because it really wasn't for very long. I did find out that the bulldozer driver and crew are okay, but I don't think they will be the ones working around power lines when construction resumes.
DeleteBeing without power for a day is the best way to find out how grateful one can be for the current coming in on demand. Sounds like you knew the best way to deal with the loss and enjoy the quiet relaxing time while you had it. Hope driver is okay!
ReplyDeletewhoa - I do hope the driver is ok - but yay you for making the best of a power-free 18 hours (and yay for it happening on the almost the longest day of the year). and of course I'm curious - what was gonna go into that blender? ;-)
ReplyDeleteglad you are all okay, that kind of power outage really upsets me - however, crazy accidents like that rarely happen!
