My reading has been the slow savoring of Katrina Kenison's Moments of Seeing. I've read several of her books before and when I came upon this collection of essays from her blog, I knew it was the right book at the right time for me. Her writing really speaks to me, partly because we're in the same stage of life (our kids grown and gone and we're wondering what now?) but mainly because she is simply an excellent writer. Along with this book, I've also been s l o w l y working on my Serena socks. All things in their own time ...
My main knitting has been my Peace Cowl, and it is doing its job. The past week has been a good news/bad news/worse news kind of week, and I've found myself furiously purling and fiercely slipping stitches. I replaced my beginning-of-round marker with a little heart and by the time I reach it, I'm usually calmed down a bit and feeling more peaceful. This knitting paired with listening to The Shell Seekers (one of my favorite "peaceful" books) has reminded me to relax, breathe, and try not to overreact. Not bad for some yarn, needles, a small heart, and an ipod!
What are you reading and knitting this week?
The Shell Seekers - oh my I love that book! and listening to it might be just the thing to go along with my Polka Dot Scarf... and I have the Katrina Kenison book on my shelf - saving it for a quiet time (ha! will there be one?!) Knitting and reading are the best comforts aren't they? Peace, my friend!
ReplyDeleteoh I hope your good news was really really good and your bad news was tiny. I hope this week treats you kindly. Gorgeous knitting!!
ReplyDeleteThat sock yarn is lovely. Hope your knitting is bringing some peace
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect idea -- to hang a "reminder" heart on your knitting! (Because sometimes we just need to be reminded to breathe.) I love The Shell Seekers, too. Let's just . . . keep knitting and reading!
ReplyDeleteYour book choice looks perfect and I think I will look for that one - the description reminds me a bit of "Gift From the Sea" which I love. Beautiful knitting and your socks seem aptly named (Serena - Serenity). Hoping your week is going well. I've never read The Shell Seekers...so many love it I need to look for that one too.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE The Shell Seekers. I've probably read it 10 times. Your cowl is beautiful! Love the color fluctuation.
ReplyDeleteThe Shell Seekers was the first Rosamund Pilcher book I read, and I loved it dearly. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are doing well with your knitting and your reading. The book is interesting, I'm not familiar with her, so may have investigate ...
I loved The Shell Seekers and it has been many years since I've read it...might be a good time to read it again! Reading and knitting make the perfect antidote for a crazy world!
ReplyDeleteAs always, I am inspired here - to read and to knit! I have neither book, but they are now on my "read list"! I love your yarn choices, especially your Peace Cowl yarn! And, that is a great idea - a reminder to be peaceful! (I am still knitting that sweater... )
ReplyDeleteOH gosh, The Shell Seekers. Now there's a blast from the past! Glad you're enjoying your knitting and reading and even more glad to hear that it brings you peace.
ReplyDeleteWith the world that is Amazon Prime I now have a copy of The Shell Seekers heading my way. (Seems like a hold in your hand book.) Here's hoping the book and the knitting bring you the peace you need to get through the bad and worse things! (And a cocktail!)
ReplyDeleteThe Shell Seekers was one of my favorite books for so long. Thanks for taking me back to the lovely memories of reading it. I still remember it as the first time I read the phrase "riot of color". Sending peaceful thoughts, good thoughts, your way and hope the news improves in your world.
ReplyDeleteDear Unraveled, You are not alone. Many of us are unraveled these days. I aim to put this book on my to-read list, as I am older than you, and I certainly don't know what's next. I hope you find some time to stitch yourself back together this week. Remember, just do the next thing, take the next breath, all shall be well. Thanks for reminding me of the Shell Seekers; that really is a blast from the past, and a good one.
ReplyDeleteYou are right; this feels very much like an unraveling time for much of the country. All we can do is breathe, make our voices heard to do what's right, and maybe channel our inner Penelope Keeling from The Shell Seekers!
DeleteHow have I never heard of The Shell Seekers?? Sending good wishes...
