On my way home, I passed a house on our street with this pallet leaning against the porch.
I can't imagine the circumstances surrounding its creation, but it felt like a personal message I needed to read. Thanks, neighborhood pallet sign painter!
This last one still has me just a bit baffled. I was heading out for a walk Tuesday afternoon when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was a garter snake, sunning itself on our front window ledge. That it was there on the warm bricks wasn't the baffling part, but how did it get there?
The window ledge is about two feet above ground level with a large bush in front of it. I showed the pictures to John and he agreed that the only way it could have gotten there was to climb up the shrub. After a little investigating, I found Jeff Beane, collections manager of amphibians and reptiles at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences who says “garter snakes are relatively fast-moving and highly terrestrial, but some may climb into shrubs or vines; some species climb more than others." Your fun fact for Thursday!
Be sure to visit Carole for more Three on Thursday thoughts.
Gah, I would have been horrified to see that snake! But having seen one slithering through a shrub before, I would not have been so surprised to see it up there. Still, I'm glad it was at your house and not mine!
ReplyDeleteoh yikes!!! I had no idea I needed to worry about seeing snakes that high off the ground! (love the sister sign ... if you find out where to purchase, I need two of them!)
ReplyDeleteBonny, I need that pallet sign right about now more than I care to admit. We are in a very challenging space with our teen right now, she's struggling deeply. This is a meaningful and timely reminder. I'm going to write it down and keep it close. Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteSending good thoughts for your family. I thought maybe I came upon the pallet sign as a personal message, but I'm glad to bring you the message you need but might not have seen from Elkton, MD.
DeleteIs that a boxwood shrub, maybe? I have a short boxwood border in one of my gardens, and garter snakes (VERY fast-moving, I can attest) live in my boxwood (or they hang out there on the regular at least). How fun to spot a snake on your windowsill! (Snakes always surprise me, but they don't really scare me -- as long as they're harmless.) I love both signs you found (and my sister needs one of those, too!) -- and the mac-and-cheese looks just divine. XO
ReplyDeleteOkay, I am now freaking out over the boxwood shrubs in my yard... I have extreme ophidiophobia. Kym's comments combined with your research... oy.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do love your signs! (and my sister absolutely has the best sister! lol)
My sister found a black snake sprawled out on her second story windowsill 3 times last summer. Or at least she posted it to Facebook 3 times. He may have been there even more. Here at my MIL's we've seen snakes climb five or six feet up her brick house. Oh my gosh! It just occurred to me.... I'm here in that brick house with my bedroom window wide open and no window screen. I won't be able to sleep in my own bed tonight! LOL
ReplyDeleteGreat signs! I love the race one.
Three very interesting things! I don't know if garter snakes can move faster than what we can "black racer" snakes in the south. They are lightning fast. I should know, one got in my house when I lived in NC, and I had a heck of a time getting it out! It was sunning itself on the threshold, and when I opened the door, it fell in. Since I was there alone, I grabbed a broom and chased it all over the house. I didn't want to go to bed with that snake in the house. I finally prevailed and "swept" it out. I'm not terrified of snakes, but I am not fond of them either. I loved both of the signs, especially the one on the pallet. Have a great day, Bonny!
ReplyDeleteWhat great signs Bonny. I don't have any blood sisters, but my brothers have the BEST sister - lol.
ReplyDeleteThat snake - geeze! You know I do NOT like them at all. Creep me the heck out. I do remember seeing one sprawled across the top of a bush at my mother-in-laws home in Norfolk. I think it was a black snake. And Jeannie Gray's comment about them climbing 5 or 6 feet up a brick house...enough to get my heart racing!!
Love it! I've got a snake that likes to sun himself on a bush in front of my house!
ReplyDeleteSnakes, eek! Sisters! Oh yeah... for sure let us know if you find the source...lunch looked scrumptious (I luv mac.cheese).
ReplyDeleteSnakes don't really bother me. He's beautiful. Sisters, I have 4. One is very special to me. Then I have another pal and we are like sisters.
ReplyDeleteThat liquor sounds amazing!!!
I want to find that sign and give it to my sister! :) What a pretty little snake! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThere is a store right across from the tavern that sells knick-knacks like the sign, so I intend to go look there eventually. Right now all many non-essential retail places are closed, and knick-knacks are definitely not essential!
Deletewe have garter snakes that sit in the bushes up high so he is climbing the bush to get to the window sill. Snake sunning is a sign of spring if you ask me!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking I'm rather glad I don't have boxwood shrubs around my house. Hahaha! Great signs, too.
ReplyDeleteWe have snakes in our garden and they ARE very quick movers (here one sec, gone the next). I am not surprised it can "climb" up onto a window ledge. Garters are the best little snakes as they eat the "bad" things that come into the garden. Love the signs. ALL my sisters have a a great sister. :)
ReplyDeleteIt must be warmer in your neck of the woods for a garter stitch to be sunning itself. I don't drink due to alcohol triggering migraines but honestly that drink is enough to tempt me to try again. Hope the weekend is treating you well.
