Thank You For the Comfort, Lucy and Anne

I haven't been able to focus on reading lately, and it is becoming a bit worrisome. In addition to knitting, reading has always been something that reliably provided me with information, entertainment, access to people and cultures different from my own, solace, escape, and comfort, but that has not been the case for several weeks now. Books that I started weeks ago, The Dog Stars and Idaho, have not held my attention, nor have the myriad of other books that I've looked at and put down. I'm tempted to blame my disquietude on anguish over the election and continuing horror over cabinet appointments, but whether those are the reasons or not, it was time to find a solution.

After searching my bookshelves and Audible library to no avail, I went to the library for some peace, quiet, and inspiration. I found it in the children's room.

Anne of Green Gables was one of my absolute favorite books when I was growing up, and it hasn't let me down after rereading it several times as an adult. Goodreads tells me that I've also read Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island, along with several other Lucy Maud Montgomery titles, but I don't remember ever reading the rest of the series. I think it's high time to reread and finish the Anne series and blow the fogs out of my soul.

“It was November--the month of crimson sunsets, parting birds, deep, sad hymns of the sea, passionate wind-songs in the pines. Anne roamed through the pineland alleys in the park and, as she said, let that great sweeping wind blow the fogs out of her soul.”
~ Anne of the Island,  L.M. Montgomery

    1. Donna, your comment has absolutely made my day! I would have emailed to thank you, but since blogger doesn't provide me with commenter's emails, hopefully you'll read this. I'm surprised that people have any interest in reading my ramblings, but so very grateful that you do. Thank you very much!

  2. I'll bet Anne will take your soul and brighten it immediately. Here's to a relaxing weekend with lots of adventures together. I think it's time I get to know one of my Great Aunt's favorite characters.

  4. Such good memories lay in these pages!! I am excited because a new Anne is coming to PBS on Thursday! The perfect thing to settle into at the end of a long day of feasting! And, my reading is not flying along either - however, my listening is consumed with The Underground Railroad - compelling and just perfect right now!

  5. That quote about November is perfect. I never read Anne of Green Gables as a child and I've always felt like I missed out.

  6. Like Carole, I never read Anne as a child, but I made up for it a few years ago. Enjoyed it completely!

  7. I have never read Anne, but now I think I should. I have books like that that comfort me and are always readable. Books have always been my boon companions, so when I have a period when I can't read, it disturbs me, too. It always seem to pass if I am patient. Please revisit Dog Stars later, as I thought it was a really good book. You may like it later when your brain is in a different and better place, not the Trump place. I think that constant chatter about him and the transition has a lot of us dealing with PTTSD, post Trump traumatic stress disorder. This, too, shall pass away. Have a restful and lovely weekend with Anne!

  8. I've been having a horrid time also - can't sleep - find myself still crying - this has been a horrible election year!! just having this safe space here with you - makes things better. Most of my friends and family were Trump voters - so I'm the outcast - and it feels pretty lonely!
I'm doing some re-reads right now - that is all my brain can handle!! they are my comfort reads - and are bringing me a bit of peace...

  9. I also had to abandon my pre-election book and have been having trouble settling into a new one. Anne makes perfect sense to me!

    1. Thank you very much, Julia! As a fellow fan of Anne and a virtual friend, I'm glad to meet you. I'm very grateful that you take the time to read regularly, and I apologize for writing lame posts about car repair during November!

  11. I admit to being somewhat of an ostrich to keep some peace of mind. Thank you for the quote. I must put Anne on my list of TBR! Happy Thanksgiving, dear friend.
