If you weren't able to attend our last Read With Us Zoom book discussion, you might be wondering what we are reading next. Today's the day you get to find out and it's a good one! *
It's The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride.
From Goodreads: "In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighbourhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.
As these characters' stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town's white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community - heaven and earth - that sustain us."The hardcover, Kindle, and audio versions of the book are all available from my library with some wait, but you do have an extended time for this book because of the holidays. Hopefully, this will give you plenty of time to place a hold, get the book, and read it. The Kindle and hardcover versions are priced reasonably on Amazon, and I'm sure your local bookseller could order a copy for you if you're lucky enough to have a local bookseller.
I do hope you'll come to The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store and Read With Us!
I loved this book, Bonny. I'm so excited to have the chance to talk about it with friends now, too! :-)
ReplyDeleteI am so excited to read this book (Libby tells me I have an 8-week wait, but realistically it's probably less than that)! And of course I'm excited to talk about it with the group!
ReplyDeleteI am excited about this book too! I have about the same wait as Sarah (at the same library!) and I am on hold for both the kindle and audio versions... whatever comes first will be what I read! :)
ReplyDeleteI have the date on my calendar already! I really enjoy our discussions!
And I'm already in queue for this at my library (I'm number 346 of 491 - but experience tells me this will move quickly). I'm anxious to read this one (and Pottstown is just up the road from me!!).
ReplyDeleteOne of the best books of the year. McBride never disappoints!
ReplyDeleteI really loved this book and Dale is reading it now and also enjoying it a lot.
ReplyDeleteI have heard many good things about this book. If reading time permits, I hope to join this discussion.
