Halloween, Fall, and What Comes Next

It's Halloween and we've reached peak color around here so I've got some photos of what fall looks like.

This one isn't exactly picturesque but I was surprised to finally find our Spirit Halloween store just a few days ago! It always pops up in some empty store, usually in early September. (Here's how they do it.) We've got plenty of empty stores but I hadn't seen the Spirit Halloween store in any of my travels around town. I was surprised to find it on Friday in an old Pier 1, which then served as a Covid testing and vaccination center. I was tempted to go in but was in a rush, so I didn't.

I have had to go into Walmart and have been mildly appalled at this awful headless decoration they have at the front door. The first time, I saw a young child crying was because they were scared and I could sympathize. It says something unintelligible, raises and lowers the ax in its hand, and is generally an unfriendly way to greet customers. I probably won't have to see it again as I bet they will be rolling out Christmas decorations tomorrow.

The rest of the photos show a little more of the fall scenery in the area.

And I got this in the mail on Friday as a reminder of what comes next.

I knew services like this existed, but I had no idea of the hefty price. It seems to me that part of the fun of the season is choosing and putting up your own decorations (but to each his own).

I hope you have a Happy Halloween with all treats and no tricks and enjoy the rest of fall along with what comes next.

  1. I still remember being a little kid and being scared of walking by our neighborhood toy store because they put scary masks in the window in October. I'm not someone who enjoys being scared, so I've never understood the scary Halloween stuff. I'd much rather see creative and fun costumes.

There was already Christmas stuff at Target when I went yesterday, and I've seen several Christmas-themed commercials already this morning, so clearly some people are not waiting for Halloween to be over!

  2. Given today's polarized, violent climate that Walmart Halloween decoration is in poor taste.
Our DIL was here last night talking about the Spirit Halloween store and I didn't know what it was. Thanks, now I'm enlightened.

  3. we are past peak and it's bittersweet! I feel like I am not present enough to see the minute changes in nature and yet my photos show I am! I'm looking forward to seeing how many kids we get on a rainy day.

  4. Fabulous fall photos, Bonny! We are past peak and yet, not past peak. It's been a weird fall here. Still lots of green, but also bare trees around. I think it is due to the dry conditions we have had. Home Depot here put out Christmas decorations at the beginning of October, if you can believe it. I feel numb to the holiday when I look at decorations that long.

  5. Oh dear, I don't care for the headless Walmart greeter! And I realize I have not seen a Spirit of Halloween store this year. There are plenty of abandoned buildings, so I'm not sure why. I've already seen Christmas "stuff" in several stores. Yikes!!!

  7. That Walmart things checks the boxes for the Walmart vibe. ;-) Love that photo up the trunk of the tree! There are some days where I wish I could hire someone to take care of all of my Christmas decor but not at that price!

  8. Your tree photos are gorgeous! I'm going to enjoy the rest of autumn and Thanksgiving before I even begin to think about Christmas. The stores around here have had Christmas candy out for about two weeks, right next to the Halloween candy.

    1. Thank you, Debbie! Savoring autumn is the best idea, especially because there is plenty left. No need to feel rushed to Christmas by the retailers!

  9. What beautiful trees. I'm savoring all of autumn. I imagine the Christmas candy will be out in the stores when I grocery shop this week. I much prefer the lighter more kid-friendly Halloween decorations.

  10. Ugh . . . that headless Halloween ghoul would certainly freak me out. I can't really imagine wanting to have it on my porch . . . But then I always prefer "cute" Halloween to "scary" Halloween. I love your bright fall colors, Bonny -- and that up-the-tree-trunk photo view is really great. And, yeah. Here comes Santa Claus . . .
