The Check (May Be) In the Mail

When we packed up, moved, and sold the MD house, there were lots of things to discontinue. I had to cancel the Comcast account and return the equipment, cancel our electric service with Delmarva, close the water and sewer account with the town, and convince Allstate that they should allow me to cancel our homeowner's insurance since we no longer owned the home.

I managed to accomplish all these successfully, and then there was the small matter of the refunds due to us.

My last Comcast bill seemed to instruct me to make my check for -$57.30 payable to Comcast. I couldn't figure out exactly how to do that, so I called Comcast to ask about my refund. After being transferred three or four times, I reached someone who told me that I should receive a refund within 30 days. Okay, Comcast, I'll wait and be patient.

Allstate said that I should have seen a credit issued directly to my credit card by now, but I have not, so they will look into it. Okay, Allstate, I'll wait and be patient.

The title company that handled the closing kept $300 in escrow so they could pay the final water and sewer bill. I've forwarded the bill to them twice, and hopefully, they will pay it before I have to send it a third time, and refund the remainder of the $300 to us. Okay, title company, I'll wait and be patient.

I do wonder how long these companies would be patient if they were waiting for payment from me? (Maybe I should give them a due date and threaten them with some late fees!)

  1. When I was a practicing CPA, we had a bulletin board in the back room of my firm where we pinned silly notices our clients recieved from the IRS. The best one I ever pinned was a refund check for $0.02. Yes. . . the IRS actually printed and mailed a client a refund check for two cents! Sigh . . . I hope your refunds all land in your accounts/mailbox soon! :-)

  2. You know, it occurs to me that these companies aren't too forgiving if *we* are late with our payments. I know you don't want to be on the phone for hours, but it seems to me that you'd be well within your rights to bug them until they get you the refunds you're owed! I hope you don't have to wait and be patient for too long. (Also, I'm relieved that Allstate finally consented to allow you to cancel the insurance!)

  3. Funny Kym should write that in her comment. I received a check from the IRS for a penny one time. I did not cash it - LOL. Bonny, you are like me and do not understand that the rules do not apply to corporations, just consumers. Don't ask me why this is so, it just is. The most maddening thing is that you cannot close out all these issues in your head until they do their part, and it takes up brain space that could be used on something else! I hope they decide to get you off their books soon and let you move on.

  4. Ugh, this is the waiting game that I dislike most of all! I like your be patient reminder in triplicate!

I too hope these things are all resolved and soon!

  5. What a pain in the patootie for you to deal with! I hope all refunds are issues post haste!

  6. That really is a pain in the butt, and of course doesn't work in the opposite way. Early on in the pandemic, our electric and water bills always arrived late...like the day they were due. When I called to pay the water bill by phone, I was actually charged (I think it wads around $6 or so) to do so. The next month, when the bill arrived late, I simply wrote a note with my check indicating when I had received the bill and letting them know that I did not expect to be slapped with a late charge. and I wasn't. But still - what company charges you to pay by phone? I hope your refunds arrive shortly!

  7. for some reason the move here went okay with the shutting off and turning on stuff when it came to utilities. The sewage company here took five months to bill me though. They were not concerned after I called numerous times that I owe them.

  8. Good luck with Comcast. That's all I'll say.
