Unraveled Wednesday

I'm joining Kat and the Unravelers for Unraveled Wednesday, with a (finally!) FO!

It's my Musselburgh and I love it. I cast this off, plunked it on my head, and went outside to take pictures. I rarely wear hats, but I've found myself wearing it on every possible occasion. I was concerned that it would be too big, but it's just about right.

I like the side with the blues and purples best, but the side with the gray is pretty good, too. I have another skein of this yarn and I'm really curious what it might look like in a Hitchhiker. After I finish another Bankhead hat, my current Hitchhiker, and my Antler cardigan, I just might find out.

I listened to The Good Son by Jacquelyn Mitchard, because I remembered The Deep End of the Ocean as an emotionally powerful and interesting book. I may be a different reader two decades later, but The Good Son was only one star for me. Overwrought, overwritten, melodramatic, and tedious, it was all the things I dislike most in one book.

But I also read a picture book, Maybe, that I purchased as a gift for my sister's granddaughter. I'll be interested to hear her opinion, but it was a five-star book for me. Beautiful, honest text paired with stunningly beautiful illustrations by Gabriella Barouch make this a must-read. My children are grown so I haven't read a picture book for a long while, but I'm thankful there are young nieces, nephews, and grandchildren in the family so I can still discover treasures like Maybe.

I started listening to Snow Falling on Cedars but am having a difficult time concentrating, so that might need to wait for a bit. I found The Power of Regret at the library and that is serving as an interesting listen while I pack in MD and make trips to Goodwill.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Love, love, love your hat - both sides! I can't pick a favorite side as they are both beautiful and it looks so good on you Bonny! I may need to knit one of those. I looked at "Maybe" on Amazon and it looks like a wonderful book. I hope your packing up in MD goes smoothly and quickly!

  3. I swear, there is magic in the Musselburgh hat! Yours looks fabulous on you, Bonny. Really perfect in every way. (I also think it's the ideal knitting for when you need a meditative knit -- once you get past that cast-on, of course.) :-) And that does look like a most lovely picture book! What charming illustrations! (I'm such a sucker for illustrations. . . ) XO

  6. I smiled as the photo of you in your amazing new hat filled my screen just now! It's beautiful and looks terrific on you. I think Jacquelyn Mitchard had a one-off with The Deep End of the Ocean, none of her books have ever come close to being that good. I met her at a conference a few years ago and she was charming and engaging but I think her writing didn't develop the way it could/should have.

  7. I love your hat! It looks great on you and those colors are perfect for gray days. I'm all set to start my own Musselburgh, but have cataract surgery tomorrow and again next week. I might start this afternoon or I might wait until after it's over! I'll be glad for better vision!

    1. Thanks, Debbie! I rarely wear hats but I'm glad for the cold weather we've had in the mornings so I've had many chances to wear it. It keeps me warm and happy! Sending you all good wishes for your cataract surgeries.

  9. Your hat is wonderful. I love those bright colors.
I just bought the Kindle version of The Power of Regret. The wait for a library book was just too long.

  10. I love that hat - both sides. Wearing it would make me smile. You include some interesting books - especially the picture book. The art in many picture books is so wonderful and this one looks like no exception. Take care and a few breaks while packing. It is a physical job.

  11. The colors of your hat! So wonderful. I wear my Musselburgh everyday (walking my dog). It's the best hat I've owned.
