A Little Exercise and Fresh Air

We got some snow this weekend and I shoveled. It was a solo activity because John is in MD, Justin is in FL, and Ryan is an hour away in PA with his own driveway to shovel. We got 6-8", but it's hard to tell since it's bare in some places and foot-high drifts in others. It's not nearly as much as they got at the NJ shore or in New England. My power's been out twice and the house was down to 50 degrees at one point, but it's on now, and it's amazing how much shoveling warms you up.

This is the view towards the street,

and this is looking down towards the barn.

I'm not sure whose idea it was to buy this house with a stupidly long driveway, but presumably, I went along with it 32 years ago. Over time, we've purchased equipment to help with clearing snow, a snowblower, and a four-wheeler with a plow. But they are only helpful if you can get them started, which I could not. So I said some words and got out the shovels. Four hours on Saturday and another four to finish yesterday, but it's done.

After all that shoveling, I just might bake a chocolate cake and not feel one bit guilty about eating a piece. I did get plenty of exercise and fresh air.

I hope your weekend was safe, warm, and dry!

  1. Glad your power is back on. We never lost power - kind of surprising with how high the winds were. I did not shovel. In fact I did not go outside at all, but I did bake a chocolate cake!!

  2. That's a LOT of shoveling to do! We have a snow blower now, thank goodness. Dale does our driveway and his dad's so it can be a lot.

  3. I hope you enjoyed some chocolate cake, Bonny. Because you MORE than earned it!!! Our first house was set up much like yours . . . a long driveway that led to our set-back-away-from-the-house detached garage. Tom shoveled. Then we got a snowblower (which was a game-changer). Eventually, his job led to MANY super-early meeting calls with far-away people in countries halfway around the world, and it was just too hard for him (and me with arthritis in my hands and wrists) to manage the snow removal. That's when we hired a snowplow service. And we've never looked back. . .

  4. Oh boy... I hope that you indeed made cake and enjoyed it multiple times! I am in agreement with Kym... you MORE than earned it! Yikes!

Although your photos are just so lovely! My only wish... we lived closer! I'd have shared the shoveling with you!

  6. I wouldn't fault you for eating a whole cake after all that shoveling!

When I first moved in with my husband when we were engaged, he lived in a townhouse with a long, sloping driveway. I didn't think much about it at the time, but there was a period of time when he was working out of down during the week and I found myself having to shovel out. It's a real workout!

  7. Wow, that is a long driveway, Bonny. Lots and lots of fresh air and exercise to get that thing shoveled. I'm glad you didn't get 2 feet of snow, but it looks like you got plenty. Have several pieces of cake or whatever your heart desires. You definitely earned it. And I hope you have a great week!

  10. With all that shoveling, you deserve a whole cake and something good to drink as well!
I'm lazy when it comes to shoveling. We have a big storm headed our way this week and I called my plow guy to make sure I was still on his list and he assured me that I was, so I plan to stay in on Wed. & Thurs.

    1. A drink and some cake sounds like an excellent idea, as does staying in on Wed. and Thurs. Stay safe, warm, and dry!

  11. Ugh! That is a lot of shoveling. I agree with Dee. Why is it that nothing works when the husband is away? I'd put some chocolate fudge frosting on that cake. I made a pan of gingerbread yesterday and poured a lemon glaze over it while it was still warm. It was tasty.

  12. Your fortitude is impressive! I would have cried and then begged a friend or hired someone to come help (therefore, I live in a condo).
