Unraveled Wednesday

I'm joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with the return of the second Nervous Breakdown. I enjoyed knitting and finally finishing the Creamsockles enough that I was compelled to immediately order some eye-searingly bright sock yarn. It hasn't arrived yet, and my fingers were itching to get back to knitting a Hitchhiker, so that's what I'm working on. I really enjoy the rhythm of knitting Hitchhikers and the joy that those colorful speckles give me. (They are much brighter up close and in person.)

On the reading front, I finished two books, Broken Ice and The Shallows, which are the second and third installments in the Nils Shapiro mystery series. They are both enjoyable 3.5-4 star books, and there is one more book in the series that I will read eventually. I accidentally left my copy of Night Waking in NJ, but luckily I've had some other reading, the real copy of Shuggie Bain I got from the Elkton library last weekend.  So far I'm finding it a compelling, immersive, beautifully-written book about some ugly (but very real) subjects.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Oh your Nervous Breakdown Hitchhiker is just so beautiful Bonny. I'm not usually drawn to yellow, but this is gorgeous! I'm reading Gone to Dust thanks to your recommendation and will enjoy it. I'll get the next in the series from the library as well. I like the character Nils Shapiro. I tried reading the sequel to 84 Charing Cross Road but just could not get into it (seemed very dated...which it is I guess).

  3. Now THAT is a lovely spring hitchhiker, Bonny! I love it. I'll bet it makes you think of flowers and hear birdsong whenever you pick it up! (And I started Shuggie Bain last night.) XO

  4. It's a good thing that those of us who read your blog regularly knew what you were talking about or we would have been worried for you by reading "the return of the second Nervous Breakdown"! Those speckles are indeed joyful.

I am just casting on my second scrappy charity sock and am working steadily on my Aldous. I am hoping to finish reading a collection of short stories this morning then will be ready to start a new book (still waiting for Summerwater from the library!). Maybe it's time to read Shuggie Bain.

  5. What a perfect HH for spring, Bonny. It is so cheerful! I am currently reading about 3 books, but none of them have grabbed me yet. I finished We Begin at the End last week, and I loved it, 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. I think it is a read that might not appeal to a lot of people, but the characters really grabbed me. I have checked and the Nils Shapiro series is available at my library, so I will be trying those soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

  8. Oh this hitchhiker is celebrating Spring for sure. I love the bright speckles. I just was able to download Miss Benson's Beetle and listened while I scrubbed the bathrooms. I think you wrote about this novel. It made my chores go by quite quickly today.
