Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with some Christmas knitting. It finally dawned on me that it's only a month away and I better get going if I am going to mail some gifts to Ryan and have them arrive on time.

To be honest I've had a little bit of trouble knitting through the pain during the past couple of days. I've tried knitting after taking tylenol with codeine, but then I seem to knit when I should be purling and vice versa. This is not helpful when the mitts are worked in k2p2 ribbing but I'm going to keep plugging away. I wanted to knit something bright and cheery for Ryan and these stripes in the Must Stash Vespa colorway seem to fill the bill (or is the expression "fit the bill"? Here's an opinion.)

There has also been some making for Thanksgiving, in the form of pumpkin pies, stuffing, and later today I'll be making several dozen crescent rolls. I make things ahead of Thursday mainly because I only have one oven, but I dream of the day when I might have double ovens or the boys will live close enough to make some parts of dinner. Who knows, maybe even next year? (I can dream, and I'm dreaming of Ryan and Justin being closer.)

I finished reading A Spot of Bother (an engaging three stars from me) and started Miss Benson's Beetle and A Promised Land. I haven't made a lot of progress in either book (see pain and drugs above) but Miss Benson seems entertaining and I'm very glad Joe Biden won the election (for many reasons). I don't think I could have faced reading the first volume of Barack Obama's memoir if that was not the case. Mr. Obama says, “I’m painfully aware that a more gifted writer could have found a way to tell the same story with greater brevity (after all, my home office in the White House sat right next to the Lincoln Bedroom, where a signed copy of the 272-word Gettysburg Address rests inside a glass case.”

“I found my mind resisting a simple linear narrative. Often, I felt obliged to provide context for the decisions I and others had made”

In my reading so far, I have found his writing brilliant (even if not particularly brief). Listening to him read his own book makes it even better.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. You are something! Still trying to do for others when you are miserable; just like a woman. I am glad that you are coping, and maybe it's better that you have distractions. I anxiously await your review of Miss Benson's Beetle. My husband has ordered A Promised Land. Please take care of yourself, Bonny. I am going to start T'giving dinner today as well.

  2. Your pies look wonderful Bonny! I plan to make a pumpkin pie tomorrow morning and then free up the oven for the turkey, a casserole and some stuffing. It will be weird for Thanksgiving to be just Fletcher and me, but I'm thankful we will see Colin & Mailing tonight. I'm sorry you are still in pain and I hope that subsides sooner rather than later. Do take care.

  3. Oh yum to those pies! I am wishing there was a "with aroma's" version of blogspot! (my heart aches that you are still in pain... sending more healing mojo your way!)

But those words of Obama... coupled with the Biden Presser yesterday... my gosh, it is so incredible to listen to sincere and honest people speak about their desire to serve. (And I just can't even keep dry eyes reading about Obama's WH home office proximity to the Gettysburg Address... especially in light of the liars convention happening in Gettysburg today)

  5. Today is pie making day for me. I made the crusts yesterday so all I have to work on are the fillings-one pumpkin and one apple. We will have a small gathering and zoom with the rest of the family. I sure hope you are feeling better!

  7. Yum! Can I have a slice of one of those pies? We're going to make an apple pie because no one else in the family likes pumpkin, and I'm missing it. I'm actually quite amazed that you've managed to bake while feeling bad enough that you are mixing up your knits and purls!

  9. Dream of those boys both living close to you. I'll dream right along with you. The pies look delicious. The mitts are so bright and happy, just right for Ryan. Man, I hope your pain and health improves. Kidney stones are so painful.

  10. Stephen Colbert had President Obama on his show last night. Many feet apart they talked about his book . There was a lot of needed laughter. Feel better

  11. Oh my, those mitts are going to be fabulous!! I just added Promised Land to my audiobook queue -- and, boy, I think you're right... that would be so depressing a read had the incumbent won. I hope you're feeling better soon, Bonny! Happy Thanksgiving!
