How Does The Garden Grow?

Pretty well, given that this a year for haphazard weeding, occasional watering, and benign neglect.

The tomatoes have blossoms,

the zucchini and cucumber plants have monster-sized leaves (but no blossoms yet),

and the string beans are coming along nicely.

Corn and carrots are looking good,

along with my blueberries.

The bushes were loaded with berries, but I suspect the birds have been enjoying them. Maybe I'll still get a few.

That empty space and low fencing is where the snow peas were until John tore them out. They produced loads of peas this year, enough for us to eat them almost every night for a month and still blanch and freeze 30 quart-size bags. Blue bottles continue to sprout.

The bee balm is looking especially majestic this year, and I love how the few sprigs of mint that I transplanted from NJ are managing to show the rampant ferns who's the boss.

Thanks for taking a tour around the garden and now I've got mint tea for everyone!

  1. I think your garden looks great for all the neglect it has had to endure due to circumstances. Looks like your decision to move your garden to MD was a good one! It must have had lots of rain at the right time. Mint tea sounds good, Bonny.

  3. I should have you come and tend to my garden -- it's looking terrible, despite all the attention I've been giving it! At least I can count on the mint. I look forward to seeing your big harvest later in the summer!

  4. Your garden is amazing! I love it! Gardening has been a big dissappointment here, new yard, bad soil, and during COVID when I could really use a garden.....

  7. Your garden is BEAUTIFUL! Everything looks so healthy and . . . abundant! Nothing like a little benign neglect when it comes to gardening. (That's my motto and I'm sticking with it!) I'd love to join you for a cup of mint tea. XO

  10. Wow, your garden looks great! I have a small flower garden and a very small vegetable & herb garden in raised bed containers. This year I've had a lot of trouble with rabbits eating my lettuce, dill, & beets. I re-planted and covered it with chicken wire and now my sister calls me Mrs. MacGregor!

    1. Way to garden, Mrs. MacGregor! Your rabbits were enjoying delicious meals, but hopefully you've outwitted them. We have a fence around our garden to help keep out deer, rabbits, groundhogs, chipmunks, and the occasional small child.

  11. I love your garden shots. Your tomatoes are about like mine: some yellow flowers are out! I am working very very hard at my gardens. I have to water them daily if we don't get any rain. It is so good for me to have my gardens to care for while we are home during COVID. I plan to donate my veggies to the local food pantry because I cannot volunteer at the barn right now.

  12. Oh my goodness!! First of all - do you have a secret for your carrots? We CANNOT seem to grow them but yours look amazing. Everything looks amazing!! And you've got me thinking about planting mint in our far back yard to beat back the ferns, ha!

    1. I think the only secret to our carrots is that they are planted in semi-sandy, loose soil in MD. We tried them in NJ and ended up with short, misshapen carrots. I always thought mint was invasive, but ferns seem to be more so. I have to tear out large bunches of them every fall so they don't take over everything, and now their is a war going on between the ferns and the mint!
