Weekending

This weekend was a good one -- a few things were accomplished, I did some fun stuff, and it was the perfect combination of getting things done and low-key, quiet enjoyment.

On Friday, I took my iPod, pleasant and patient attitude, and the box I was mailing to Ryan and walked up to the post office. I have approached the mailing of his gifts with trepidation ever since the post office lost his boxes two consecutive years. They were eventually located in the Newark, NJ distribution center in mid-January, but I always drop things off at the post office with a little wish for their safe, speedy, and efficient travels.

I only had to wait an hour in line, and the clerk said she would take special care of my package when I told her it contained two handknit items. You can see a corner of it on the cart, ready for its journey. The box is currently in Denver, so it looks like her special care has worked so far!

John, his brother, and one of his sisters had some family decisions to make about things that belonged to his mother. We were going to take pizza and beer over to his brother's house, but when his brother said he had pizza Friday night and didn't feel like it two nights in a row, I decided to make lasagna and take that instead. I had to make yet another trip to the grocery store (I had been twice in the past two days), but after shopping, I made the lasagna, took it over, they discussed things while the lasagna baked, and I drank beer and knit. It was quite a pleasant evening.

For fun on Sunday, I took my inspiration from Kat. After laundry was done, it was time to make Kat's raspberry and brie puff pastry tart. While my raspberries boiled down, I decorated a little bit.

Then I put the tart together and waited impatiently for the first delicious taste. It was delicious! Kat's mods of subbing raspberries and bacon for cranberries and pancetta sounded so good that that's what I did, too. I've eaten two of the corners, and since John is in MD and I'm here in NJ to do some Christmas things that only I can do, I get to enjoy the rest of it by myself this week. Thank you, thank you, Kat!

Sunday evening I watched Love Actually and worked on finishing a waffle hat. I was initially dismayed to find that nobody (Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu) seemed to be streaming Love Actually, so it was a pleasant surprise to find the DVD in our cabinet. It was a lovely end to a very nice weekend.

I hope you, too, had a good weekend and your week is off to a good start!

  1. Your puff pastry looks delicious! I'll keep my fingers crossed that Ryan's package gets to him safely, and thanks for the reminder that it's time for the Annual Viewing of Love Actually.

  2. what a great weekend and how nice that the package is where it's supposed to be. I think shipping this year has been a little off. I'm surprised at how many movies I want to watch aren't on a streaming service as well. We own quite a collection of Christmas movies.

  3. Oh! That puff pastry! :-) It sounds like a very pleasant weekend (despite an hour's wait at the PO; that's just . . . a long time). I wish a speedy delivery to Ryan, and more time for pleasant knitting this week.

  4. Oh man, that pastry looks so good (and my stomach is growling as I type this). Love your wreath with all the birds on it. Sounds like it was a very nice weekend Bonny. Sending all good vibes for your boy's package to arrive safely (where it should arrive).

  5. Your puff pastry looks so delicious! YUM! (I have another sheet and I think I will do a "free form" tart like you did!) (And, lasagna sounds like the perfect thing for this cold day so I am off to get some sausage and tomatoes out of the freezer!)

  6. OMG on the PO. If we need an actual window service, we use the one on campus. Otherwise, I'm a Click-N-Ship devotee!

  8. Oh, that pastry looks delicious!! Yum. I am also a fan of Click-N-Ship... sometimes even with the pick-up option, though I usually just drop it in a nearby box.

  9. Hoorah, Bonny, it sounds like your head is in a terrific space! I applaud your mindfulness, patience and flexibility. Stay there! That tart looks killah. I hope your packages have safe and accurate travels, and that you have plenty of quiet knitting time this week. I found a Rikke hat that I had "almost" finished last spring, and I was so excited. Then I opened the bag and realized that a moth had gotten to it. It had about 5 large holes in it, and when I frogged it, it turned into lots of little balls. I may have the patience to make that into a hat, but I am waiting on some yarn now for a hat for _this_ winter so can do it without weaving in so many ends. At first I was a little upset, but then I let it go. I hope the moth enjoyed his snack.

  10. OH, and I meant to mention that if you don't know about this, please sign a petition online to ask Macmillan publishing to reconsider their new policy to only sell one copy of an ebook to any library, no matter how large the city. I fear for our libraries if this becomes the trend. And if you want to share it on the blog, even better. I'm sure they are motivated by money, and I know the publishers are struggling, but this smacks of limiting access to books for those who cannot afford them. Here is the website: http://www.ala.org/advocacy/ebooksforall-petition. If you already know about this, then just imagine I am Emily Littella - "never mind".

    1. Thanks, Kathy! My kids helped me make that wreath years ago. It's looking a little bit worse for wear, but I haven't been able to find one I like as much, so the tradition continues!

  13. I do as Vicki mentioned and use ClickNShip from the usps website. You can take your package into the PO and leave it without waiting. The downside would be not seeing it leave on a cart! The tart looks delish! Doesn't everyone have Love Actually in their cabinet? I forgot we had a copy until last year when we were looking for a movie to watch.

  14. That does sound like a great weekend. We were able to watch Love Actually with HBO on demand.

  15. I am feeling fortunate that my nearby grocery store has a little post office counter. I have waited for 20 minutes or so to mail packages late last week. Let's hope Ryan's package arrives safely. Sounds like you had a nice weekend.
