Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, today with two more Rikke hats in progress. You cast on on size 4 needles and then switch to 7s, which provides the perfect opportunity to have two Rikkes in progress. It's all Rikkes, all the time here, in an attempt to provide the maximum number of family members with warm hats for Christmas.

I've been home by myself this week, which means no cooking, more knitting time, and more audiobook listening time. Because I've been frustrated by six-twelve month waiting times on Overdrive, I've been searching a little differently. By applying the "available now" filter, I can easily find audiobooks that I can check out without any wait. I've been surprised by how many books are available, ones that I meant to read but missed for some reason. In just the past four days I've flown through Daisy Jones & the Six and Red at the Bone (both very good four-star books for me), and I'm currently reading How to Be a Good Creature and Evvie Drake Starts Over. Next in the queue is The Night Circus. I'm not sure if it's actually a prequel to The Starless Sea, but it looks like I'll be reading it soon, and then I'll be happy to purchase Starless Sea. You can click on any of these titles in the right sidebar if you are interested.

But now it's time for me to turn off my iPod, pick up a Rikke, and watch what I hope is more unraveling of this presidency. I remember watching the debate on the articles of impeachment during the summer of 1974, and I hold out hope that there is a similar outcome this time. I have my doubts about whether there are any Republicans in the Senate that are willing to face facts and do what is right when the time comes, but again, I have hope.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Go you on the reading and knitting! The Night Circus is amazing and The Starless Sea is a completely different book. I'll be curious to hear what you think about both.

  2. From your lips to God's ears! Knitting the same old poncho and fingerless mitts. Not getting much accomplished these days! Reading...The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls...so far so good!

  3. Bravo on the reading. And hopefully we can all say Bravo on the unraveling of the orange-haired mess. Those hats are just wonderful and I bet all will be so happy to receive (I think this is going to be a long, cold winter).

    1. I'm only a few chapters in, but it's quite enjoyable so far. I've made it my bedtime reading, and it's a lovely book to fall asleep with!

  5. Assembly line Rikkie's, I love it! I probably would not have thought of the needle difference and how to keep things going, Bonny. Good thinking! I, too, am going back and reading books published a while ago to increase access. And I have a lot of books I have accumulated here over the years that I just didn't get read for one reason or another. So I picked one of those up last night. It's get read or get donated time around here. I expect you to have enough hope for both of us, Bonny. The teflon Prez will come through this without harm, I am afraid. But hope is the things with feathers, and I am counting on you being right and me being wrong. I hope you like The Night Circus. I enjoyed that book.

  7. You are tempting me with the two needle plan for those cute hats. But garter and I do not get along.....

    1. There are plenty of easy ribbed and/or stockinette hats out there if you're in the mood for some easy, meditative round-and-round knitting, but you are the boss of your knitting and should knit what you want!

  8. Your week sounds like heaven to me! I am looking forward to my vacation in a couple of weeks, when I hope to do much of the same.

I loved The Night Circus and am looking forward to reading her new book soon (looks like I'll get it from the library in about two weeks). If you continue to be frustrated by library wait times, check to see if you can use Hoopla through your library. It doesn't have as wide a selection and I think there's a limit on how many things you can check out each month, but whatever you borrow you can read/listen to immediately.

  9. Your days sound very much like my days. :) There is always a balancing act between buying a book or waiting for it to be available from the library. I put a fair amount of brain effort into weighing which to do. The British books I favor don't usually have long wait times, but they aren't often available AT ALL. I saw a Fair Isle patterned hat and jumped at the chance to buy the kit. Now I need to get it on the needles.

  10. Oooh, that sounds like my kind of week! What a great strategy for your books.

  11. I do the same search, I'm too impatient for the wait list. However, I have a buying book problem as well...well I like the buying part so it's not really a problem for me.

  12. I knit a few more rows on a hat I plan to give to charity y’day. Good that you found a great way to “read on” even if your desired titles are backlogged. Read ON!
    Cheers~

  14. I also search the Available Now while waiting for the holds to come in. Keep on with those hats - your family is going to love them.
