Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday. This week you may think I've gone off The Deep End, so that's what I'm calling this Hitchhiker. It's not my fault and I can explain.

I have some leftovers from these mitts plus one other skein that I was contemplating using for a two-color shawl. Ryan volunteered to go to The Loopy Ewe, take his mitts, and find a solid navy or red yarn to match. He went, but let me know that there was nothing that matched ... at all. He said that he had picked out two other skeins, had The Loopy Ewe send them to me, and he hoped I liked the surprise.

I was indeed surprised when I opened the box. He had chosen a lovely blue sock blank called Vergißmeinnicht  (however that is pronounced, it translates to forget-me-not),

and another John Deere sock blank. When I called and asked about the third John Deere, Ryan said this one had much darker green, less yellow, and some really interesting brownish-golden tones. He thought he might like this one best, so could I please knit his Hitchhiker with it and maybe I could gift the other two to some knit-worthy relatives? Hey, he's my kid and I love him, so I'm willing to go off The Deep End and knit a third green to yellow Hitchhiker for him. Knitting that I do for a loved one because they asked me nicely makes them knit-worthy, and the knitting is completely enjoyable, even if it is the third time.

My reading isn't quite so reminiscent of Groundhog Day. I've been reading The Testaments and finding it interesting. I was a little afraid that it would make me feel terrorized like The Handmaid's Tale but that has not been the case. So far, there are no big surprises, but I'm enjoying the additional explanations concerning Gilead. I've also gotten Lanny through interlibrary loan and am reveling in the story, structure, and vocabulary in this gem of a book.

What are you making and reading this week?

Also, don't forget to leave a comment here by this Friday, Sept. 20th at 5 pm EST if you are interested in my giveaway of this yarn!

  2. He gets high marks for knitworthiness, and you get high marks for mothering! I'm not sure I could stand to knit three of the same pattern in the same colors, but I'm sure if my child asked me, I wouldn't be able to say no.

  3. Ryan is beyond knitworthy.... he even goes to the yarn shop! I love the new blank and I can imagine that knitting with that blank is a bit like striped sock knitting - it seems to go faster as you await the next color!

  4. Oh wow! We all know Ryan has fabulous taste in yarn and once again he has proven it. The Forget-Me-Not blank is simply gorgeous...and I'm laughing about the 3rd John Deere Hitchhiker. You are a fabulous Mom and he is definitely knit-worthy. The Hitchhiker is such a meditative knit, and making it (again) for a loved one just makes it even better. Enjoy!!

  5. I always drop everything and knit whatever one of my kids ask me to knit! It doesn't happen often, but I totally get why you've gone off the deep end, Bonny. I'd jump right in with you, in fact! XO (I've been . . . not planning to read The Testaments. I read The Handmaid's Tale when it first came out . . . way back when . . . and it haunts me YET.)

  6. I would knit anything asked of me by Dan. And Ryan has made an excellent choice! Considering The Testaments...I like what people have been saying.

  8. IF either of my boys or husband asked for a hand-knit, I too would drop everything. So far that has happened... almost never. You are indeed A Most Excellent Mom!

  10. Ryan has great taste and the fact that he went to the yarn shop is quite touching. He also had good reason for choosing the yarns he did. Nothing better than knitting for our children at their request. Knit that third hitchhiker with pride. Enjoy the knitting.

  11. Happy Sigh ... a loved one picking out their own yarn and suggesting what it might be knit up as --- in a pattern you've actually used before and LOVE! - is bliss. This Hitchhiker is blessed for sure! I hope the sales team at TLE are treating him well ;-)
