Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, with some good unraveling and simultaneous not-unraveling. I'm going to continue unraveling my Wollmeise blank and re-knitting, based on the little experiment I conducted.

Before: a slightly bumpy, uneven-looking Hitchhiker

During: soaking. Will the bumpiness block out?

After: Yes! It's not perfect, but good enough is good enough for me.

In reading, I really enjoyed Fall Back Down When I Die (my review is here if you're interested), and I'm about 75% done with Normal People. I'm still reading Inland, but I'm finding that book to be more dense, so it demands my attention and consideration. I was concerned about what I would read next when I finished Normal People, but perhaps I will just concentrate on Inland. I don't think I've monogamously read just one book for quite a long time!

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. I'm so glad that "bumpiness" blocked out reasonably well! (That sunny, bright yellow must bring you happy-cheerfulness as you knit.) :-) I'm making amazingly fast progress on my sweater (for me) (I mean, it's not like I'm going to break any speed records here or anything, but I'll actually be able to wear it yet this spring.) (Of course, spring lasts for a long time yet here in Michigan, so there is that.) I'm reading Daisy Jones and The Six (picked it up from the library yesterday). I've been reading a lot of duds lately, mixed with some super-serious stuff, so I'm ready for something a little more . . . fun?

  2. I'm happy that you are happy with your new Hitchhiker. It's good to get that affirmation before you spend endless hours knitting. It is so "springy"! I'm glad to see your review of Fall Back Down, but can I say that I am tired of reading sad books? It seems everything I try to read these days is sad. Having said that, I am sure I will read it. I have been having monogamy problems with books lately, and that is a new problem for me.

  3. Glad to see that the yarn learns to behave itself after a block! I'm sure it's still a bit annoying to knit with the bumpy yarn, but at least you know that it will calm down eventually. I'm reading a book I started yesterday called Book of the Unknown Midwife. I'm maybe a quarter of the way into it and not sure if I like it or not. It's not my usual genre, but I'm far enough in that I suppose I should finish it.

  4. I'm not sure I'd like knitting the bumpy yarn, but I would love those colors! I usually have three books going ... one for my small group, one to listen and one to read. lately, the audio stream has been moving really slow (thanks to all the podcasts) - I finally started Where the Crawdads Sing (bookclub is next week) and I'm wondering how on earth I used to listen to so many books!

  5. I love the colors in your sock blank and am glad some of that bumpiness soaked out. I haven't been knitting much because I needed to finish a quilt for my youngest nephew who graduated HS on the 10th. I'm reading Virgil Wander and although it is not a very long book, I'm finding it a slow read. The quirky characters have grown on me and I'm enjoying the setting (a small town in northern Minnesota on the shores of Lake Superior). I'm about 2/3 of the way through and am curious about how it will all end up.

    1. It was a quick soak and I'm thinking that a good blocking will make it look even better once I'm done. I'm glad I can keep on unraveling and re-knitting!

Your quilt sounds like a wonderful gift for your nephew, and I'll have to take a look at Virgil Wander. It does sound interesting!

  6. That yarn is so joyful! I'm happy your experiment worked out for the best! I'm listening to PW Bible still and knitting sock 2 still. Hoping for a productive weekend ahead!

    1. I was happy with the results, and it was a relatively quick soak. I hope that with a real blocking once I'm done it will look even better!

  9. So happy that this bright cheerful hitchhiker is going to block well. I agree with you that a second, perhaps a little longer soak, will relax the yarn even more. Otherwise the texture will just add to the charm of the shawl.

  10. Good to hear that quick soak was the right thing to do and you feel like you can keep your forward progress. I finished Normal People and liked it very much! I was reminded at every turn how hard it is to be that young and how poor my decision making skills were at that age. Do we ever stop second guessing ourselves?
