Joining Carole and friends for Three on Thursday. Earlier this week, I shared my lovely surprise tulips reaching towards the sun. Today I've got three more surprises, growing in the shade.
First, plenty of hostas. I think I might need to add a few variegated ones.
Next, a small forest of ferns. They've just sprouted this week, but I think there will be enough room among them to plant my favorite shade flower, bleeding hearts.
And lastly, lots of lilies of the valley.
And as a bonus, I want to share something extraordinary. Our lawn in NJ consists of weeds, moss, and some grass. The lawn here in MD is mostly grass and clover, but it's also got thousands of violets. John considers them weeds, but I think they are just beautiful. There are lovely patches of purple everywhere! I mowed yesterday and felt bad about cutting many of them off, but I hope they continue to grow and bloom.
Head on over to Carole's for more Three on Thursday thoughts.
oh, so pretty! I'm with you ... a yard full of purple (or yellow) makes me happy!
ReplyDelete(Trust me. They will continue to grow and bloom.) (Forever!)
ReplyDeleteBut hostas and ferns! Those are wonderful surprises in a new garden. XO
I love lilies of the valley! We tried to plant some years ago, and nothing happened. So I'm always jealous when someone else has them.
ReplyDeleteI love that yard of violets! We have them too and Steve is of the same opinion as John, but I am with you - they are lovely to behold! (And, it looks especially love with all the yellow dandelions in my yard, lol)
ReplyDeleteIf you ask me, a weed is only a weed if it's ugly or otherwise unwanted. If you like it, it's not a weed -- and those violets are lovely!
ReplyDeleteYour plants are so much farther along than ours. My hostas are just starting to unfurl and the lilies are mere shafts. I know I have SO much to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteDale is all in favor of anything green that resembles grass so violets are okay around here! LOL I'm loving all of your surprise plants!
ReplyDeleteI like the purple too! And really...we don't have a very nice lawn so anything not brown makes it beautiful in my mind! And I like what SJ says!
ReplyDeleteLilies of the Valley - gosh, I love them! Our old house had violets everywhere but our current house has wild strawberries all over the yard.
ReplyDeleteI love violets and I like dandelions. I know they are both considered weeds, but I think they are pretty and are good for the pollinators. Your plants are way ahead of ours this year, but we have been having so much cool, wet weather that things are very slow waking up this spring. My bleeding heart is only about two inches high and usually it has blooms by the end of April.
ReplyDeleteBut hopefully your bleeding heart blooms will be glorious when they do blossom (just a bit late). Something to look forward to!
DeleteOh yes! The wood violet is the state flower of Wisconsin and I love them!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are getting excellent surprises Bonny!! Gorgeous blooms. Love that you have hostas and ferns too. We seem to have many, many more violets this year. The lawn filled with them is a beautiful sight.
ReplyDeleteYou have lots of great surprises in your yard! I, too, love violets, and they grow very well down here. I gave up on an all grass lawn a long time ago, and violets are one of the more beautiful things that come with a laissez faire lawn. Your hostas are ahead of mine, and I live in the South. I guess it's all that weird weather we've been having. Happy Thursday, Bonny.
ReplyDeleteWe have wild violets in the yards here, too - I adore them! I was going to name my baby "Violet" if a girl... but I got two boys so no violets.
ReplyDeleteLove the green greed growing photos~
ReplyDeleteI love ferns! and violets too. Lovely surprises springing up.
ReplyDeleteI also love the little violets. We have a few that come up around the yard and in a long perennial bed where I leave them. Such beautiful greens and growth. Hooray for Spring. I think we are all more than happy it has come again.
