Wild Kingdom

I couldn't sleep very well last night, so I've been up for several hours, thinking about all kinds of things. Even though my brain was busy, I couldn't come up with anything good to write about today until I looked through my photo folder. So today you get animals - insects, an amphibian, and an interesting one with two mammals.

It's always nice to see bees on the purple coneflowers. They were buzzing about just a week or so ago.

The coneflowers are looking more bedraggled, but I was even happier to catch a monarch butterfly.

It's been so wet here in MD (and really the whole east coast) that this toad is perfectly at home, just hanging out in this pot.

This photo is from my SiL, and I love the juxtaposition of their cat curled up comfortably, and a bear browsing just a few yards away. They live in northern PA, and are usually watchful when they are outdoors, especially since this particular bear had two cubs this year.

I hope you enjoy a good weekend with plenty of nature (but no bears).

  1. I love these photos! I remember when bears would wander into our town in NY, they could really make a mess of your backyard. I also like your little toad, I have one (or more) who lives in the flower pots on my front porch. Have a great weekend1

  5. I love bees! Even though I am allergic to them, whenever I see them, my mind goes to the tiny and huge kingdoms in which they live. They are fascinating. That bear looks closer than your description. I would be closing the door - LOL! Lovely pictures, Bonny, thanks for sharing. Have a restful and lovely weekend.

    1. This is a black bear and that species isn't known for being aggressive like grizzlies, but they still make sure to treat her with respect and don't antagonize her. She had two cubs this spring and they were very careful around them. A little scary, but also interesting!

  7. Yes, thank you very much I don't think my weekend will include a bear. Goodness. I love the flowers with bees and the toad. We have rain in our forecast tomorrow. I'm thinking of a veggie pot pie and casting on a Christmas stocking. Have a good weekend.

  9. Bees, bears, and butterflies! Oh my! The bear would be fascinating to watch, but I'm not sure I'd be very happy about taking a walk with that mama bear as my neighbor.

  10. I haven't been walking because of the bear here. I don't think I could survive it mentally :) Love your flowers and toads and how you created a lovely post from photos found.

  11. Oh, man, I'm not sure I could hold it together to take a photo through the screen door of a browsing bear in my back yard. YIKES! Purple coneflowers remind me of my mom... so pretty.
