Randomly on a Monday

I've just got a few random things to share on this Monday.

I cleaned out the refrigerator and found about 20 really small, slightly dessicated apples in the fruit drawer that I couldn't just throw away. I'm not quite sure how they got there, but I peeled them with the intention of making sauteed apples to serve with meatloaf on Friday. Many of them cooked down quickly to something resembling applesauce, while others remained fairly chunky. I tasted them and thought this would make interesting apple pie filling, but we've managed to eat almost the whole batch, so no pie. There's just a small bowlful left, and I'm debating whether whipped cream would be a good addition or not.

In the winter my hands take a real beating despite my repeated moisturizing efforts and trying almost every hand cream available. January is the time it really gets painful when the skin beside my thumbnails splits. I sound like a wimpy whiner, but the cracks do hurt, and make doing dishes, knitting, and almost everything that I use my thumbs and hands for more difficult. I try to keep them lubricated with A&D ointment and covered with band-aids, but they inevitably fall off.

I was in the drugstore looking for something that might work, and saw a bottle of New Skin liquid bandage. When I read the ingredients, they sounded similar to Super Glue. A quick check of Google showed me that loads of people already do this, so my thumbs are now Super Glued and I can knit again!

In a first for me, I actually watched two football games. This was mainly because Justin was predicting a Patriots - Vikings Super Bowl and we both wanted to see if that was going to be the case. My takeaways from the games: I felt very sorry for the Jaguars mostly because they looked so sad, and I was shocked by how well the Eagles did. Good thing the Crisco Cops were on duty. Also, I really love the Vikings' purple and am going to search for some sock yarn in that incredible color.

My boots have been leaking for a while now, and I've been searching for the perfect waterproof and warm pair. John and Justin told me that Muck Boots were the only logical choice, but I resisted for quite a while, hoping for something a little cuter. I finally gave in and ordered a pair, and it turns out they were right. I'm not a fan of camo or pink, but these work so well I can overlook that. There is also the powerful feeling that wearing these tall boots gives me. I love my Big Boots and want to wear them everywhere!

  1. Dale has been suggesting Muck Boots for me for ages and I've been eyeing a solid green pair as I'm just not a fan of camo. Hooray for the Pats! (ducking because I know so many hate us)

  2. When we first moved here my cuticles split horribly. I had heard about using Super Glue, but never knew anyone that tried it. Now I do ...........if the splits get bad again, I'll be heading for the hardware store. LOL (So far, a bit of neosporin and a bandaid before bed seems to help the bad spots and they are sealed by morning.)

  3. I hope you found the whipping cream! Smith swears by super glue for his thumb cuts. I'm a coconut oil fan (to keep them from happening) and occasionally wear a bandaid. I tend to chew the super glue off. Yuk. I LOVE your boots. They look powerful and fun to wear. Super hero Bonnie to the rescue!

  4. ALWAYS Whipped Cream - LOL. ouch that thumb looks sore. Mine get bad...but not like that. Hope the super glue works for you. My Dad's thumb used to get a crack right in the middle - weird.

I'm not a sports fan at all (thankfully neither is Fletch), so we didn't watch, but there were fireworks in the neighborhood after the win. The Crisco stuff cracks me up.

I love your new boots. And, they will go well with a pink pussy hat. No one will mess with Bonny!!!

  5. I love the super glue tip! I am in the same boat as you with dry skin - hands, feet, arms, legs. It is just such an awesome time of the year! And, I love your new boots! Tres chic!

  6. Bonnie, I feel your pain, literally! The cuticles on both thumbs on both sides are split and seem to stay that way all winter. Super glue does help, but I find my hands are in water so much that it wears off quickly. Better than bandaids, but not a total fix for me. I'm glad it's working for you. I need to find that kind with a brush! That would make it easier to apply. Those apples look good, and I vote for cream if not whipped cream. I have a baseball hat that matches your boots -LOL! I'm not a big camo fan either, but I have a very small head, and I buy what fits. I think they may you look serious and not to be trifled with! And if they work well, that's all that matters. Our weather is NICE! Since I complain about the cold, I thought I should rejoice when it is great. I hope yours is better as well. Let's both aim for a focused, productive week full of leisure time, if that is possible!

    1. I've only been using the super glue for a couple days, and while it's not perfect, my thumbs feel so much better. It's amazing to me how such small injuries can hurt so much! Our weather has also been fairly nice and warm, but we're supposed to have an inch of rain tomorrow. That would usually dampen my outlook, but I'm actually looking forward to stomping around in the puddles and mud with my new boots, like a kid playing in the rain. I like your goal of a focused, productive week, and am about to start my evening knitting time and hope you get to do the same!

  7. Brian gets cuticle splits all the time -- because his hands are in protective gloves all the time and they get quite dried out. He swears by super glue now, although he was leary of that suggestion at first! As for the boots? Well. Sometimes we just have to ignore our fashion instincts and go with what works best! (And I hope you tried the whipped cream. Because YUM!) XO

  8. Marc uses super glue on the cuts on his hands, too. (I'm glad to know this is actually a "thing" and not just some weird idea he came up with!) I LOVE your new boots. Who knew Camo & Pink went so well together. (not so happy about the outcome of the games. neither of my teams won! of course it does relieve me of any need to care about the next one!) Happy Monday!!

  11. The Eagles-Vikings game was awfully disappointing. Eagles deserved to win, though.
