I ate what is probably my last homegrown tomato and mayonnaise sandwich of the season. Sad, but delicious.
I made a prime rib roast on Sunday. I've been making a concerted effort to use what's in the freezer and I found this forgotten at the bottom. I think I intended to make it as a special welcome home meal when Justin came back from Texas. His girlfriend (at the time) was going to join us, but she decided that she didn't really want an in-person relationship and dumped him a few days after he got back, so the celebratory dinner didn't happen. I decided that John and I should eat it before it got any more freezer-burned, and it was delicious.
And look at my crazy Christmas cactus, blooming in mid-October! I do have others, so I hope some of them save their blossoms until it's a bit closer to Christmas.
I do love zinnias and that whole field of them is fantastic! You've reminded me that I have a roast in the freezer, too, that I bought last year for Christmas but we didn't wind up having it. I should cook it some Sunday and have the kids over.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Those zinnias! Mmm! That roast! (Justin's former girlfriend missed out on not just a great boyfriend, but a great meal to boot. . . ) (Her loss.) (Just sayin.) I have a Christmas cactus getting ready to bloom right now, too. It usually holds off until closer to Thanksgiving, but I guess it's as confused as my outdoor plants about proper bloom times . . .
ReplyDeleteThe last tomato of the season is the saddest thing ever. And, on my lists this week is to organize the freezer because I think I have some "forgotten" things in there that need to have the same thing done to them before the freezer burn overtakes them!

ReplyDeleteWe might get one more sandwich (today!). Our garden froze a few weeks ago and then took a death knell frost Sunday. Garden clean up continues today and then planting of garlic by months end. I need to clean my freezer because I know there is something wonderful hidden within. Thank you for the push.
ReplyDeleteA post full of beautiful color, and I can just smell the autumn through the pictures. I cleaned out my freezer, which needed it badly, a couple of weeks ago. I am cooking my way through what I found. There were quite a few surprises! I just recently read that a very, very small sprinkle of sugar on a tomato will vastly improve its taste if it is not home grown. It works! How did I not know about that? DOH! This entire post is seductively domestic, Bonny.
ReplyDeleteWe've had some "potluck" dinners lately with my forgotten freezer finds. Chicken salad with a few lone chicken breasts, kielbasa, potatoes, and apples with some of the six pounds of kielbasa I found, and cinnamon sugar twists with a box of old puff pastry. It's been like a treasure hunt, and I hope you found some good things! My grandfather always ate tomatoes, home grown or not, with sugar sprinkled on them. I've never tried it, but I think I will have to!
DeleteLovely flowers, my zinnias had a resurgence of bloom and are nicely crinkly. I need to get some pumpkins desperately, everyone's are so orange and fall-like. Finally a cool, definitely not warm day here - wonders!
ReplyDeleteAnd more than a couple of reminders to clean out the freezer have been seen, I may need an inventory but it's not that deep, I can get to the bottom easily.
I'm tempted to go by the field of zinnias again today for one last look. We're supposed to have frost tonight and I don't think they'll look very good if that actually happens. It was 65 degrees last night, and 32 predicted tonight, so it's finally cooling down here, too!

ReplyDeleteThe sandwich looks delicious. I have a few of my garden tomatoes left on the counter. I hope to savor each one. Last night I made a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. Beautiful colors. My Christmas cactus is not budding yet but it was early last year. It does have that slightly red tinge on some of the foliage. What's with that? I love the zinnas. I didn't plant any this year and miss them.
ReplyDeleteSeems like this is a particularly good year for pumpkins 'round these parts. DH commented that he had never seen so many on display at farmsteads.
ReplyDeletemy Christmas cactus is also blooming, silly plant. I just saw my freezer and thought, huh, I didn't know ______ was here. You name it, and it was in my freezer. Love the fall like photos :)
