Now It's Summer

My first tomatoes of the season,

and my first tomato and mayonnaise sandwich.

Tomatoes are the reason I have a garden!

  2. We have lots of green tomatoes but no red ones yet! Hooray for homegrown tomatoes!

  3. Nothing beats the first tomato sandwich of the season, made with a tomato that is still warm from the sun!

  4. I just made a batch of tomato jam (my first), and I am really enjoying it. I had some "less than excellent" tomatoes, and they were perfect for this. Your tomatoes are beautiful!

    1. I have never had tomato jam, but based on your recommendation, I may be making some as more of my tomatoes ripen. I bet it looks beautiful in the jar and tastes even better!

  5. I made an audible GASP when I saw that sandwich. nothing says summer like a fresh tomato sandwich. (have I told you that I have my grandmother's honey whole wheat bread recipe and that we made loaves of it the last summer I visited ... and it was best as toasted cheese. and fresh tomato sandwiches. I need to write about that!)

  6. Oh my gosh, in our garden our tomatoes are at the edge of ending "down" here at least 500 miles south of you. Yours make me want more.
This year I was in charge of buying the plants from the local farmer's co-op, I just selected what the fellow in front of me got (really, I don't know tomatoes) and what resulted was a beautiful golden yellow variety, and some smaller irregular looking Roma types -- they both are/were delicious, one other plant has 2 green ones and no more! But I sorely miss red ones.
My favorite tomato sandwich is a grilled cheese with plenty of tomato slices and basil. Mmmm-mmm.

    1. It's only 500 miles, but it sure makes a difference! We're really just starting tomato season here in central NJ, and I'm usually picking the last of them sometime in September. I'm going to have to try your sandwich, as soon as I have some more ripe tomatoes.

  7. Oh man! I am so envious! No big red tomatoes here yet... I can almost taste that sandwich though - summer, sunshine, and bursting flavor... mmmmmm!

  8. I am addicted to mayo and slather it on. Tomatoes remind me of hot summer days! We have one that we bought (tomato plant) and the customary volunteers :) :)

  9. Filled with envy!! We have had a few little tomatoes, but nothing worthy of sandwich material. Lucky you! Deserving you!!
