Sundays are for writing about food. Today it's about what my dear mother-in-law thought were the most important things I needed to know when I moved to Florida with her son in 1981. He was attending University of South Florida for his Master's degree in zoology, and I drove down by myself after I found a job at Tampa General Hospital. Before I climbed into my packed car, she handed me this folded-up piece of paper, told me it was important and contained the secrets to a happy marriage. I waited until I arrived in Florida, unpacked, and got organized before I carefully unfolded it.
I now share with you the secrets to a happy marriage:
I do occasionally make Cherry Cream Cheese Pie and Watergate Dessert, but have only made Black Bottom Cake once. We've been married 33 years, so it must have worked. I do feel very lucky to have been entrusted with these valuable secrets!
wouldn't it be great if these three recipes really were all it took! somehow, though, I sense that 33 years together is due to a lot more than that! it did make me smile...and I'm impressed you kep the piece of paper all that time!
ReplyDeleteI always thought the secret to a happy marriage was . . . something else. LOL. Great memories in those recipes, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteMy mother-in-law invited me to her house so I could learn, step-by-step, how to make her lemon meringue pie (which is very good - and one of my favorites) for Tom. Because . . . favorite dessert; happy marriage; etc. Turns out, though, that Tom always hated his mom's lemon meringue pie. So I've never made it. (33 years, here, too!)
ReplyDeleteThat's sweet!
ReplyDeleteWe're almost to 35 years and if dessert (or cooking) was what it took we would have parted long ago, but I love the memories you have folded up in your piece of paper. It's wonderful to have her handwriting and recipes!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great theme for a cookbook: the 3 recipes that hold my marriage together. I'm feeling the family recipe love today as my son and I bake cookies for Grandpa's Cookie of the Month Club. Time for the November installment: Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies with Walnuts and Chocolate Chips. So good!
ReplyDeleteYou know what they say about the way to a man's heart.
ReplyDeleteDesserts or not, you must have found the way!
I make my mother in law's lasagne and I think its given me a 5% kick in the secret to a happy marriage department. :-) I love that you've held on to the recipes - I'll bet they bring a smile to your face!
