Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday, today with some making of a slightly different sort for me.

I have my mother's old console Singer sewing machine and it sits on a landing at the top of the stairs. I see it multiple times each day, and it has had mask-making supplies piled on top for weeks. I finally decided to stop feeling guilty every time I pass by and just sew them.

I thought I had cut out at least 12 masks along with the lining fabric, but I hit a small snag when I realized that I had only thought about cutting out the lining (kind of like imaginary knitting).

I didn't want to lose momentum, so I quickly cut out a bunch of lining pieces. Nylon has worked well for me in previous masks, but I had used up all my old half slips. I decided I probably wasn't going to wear the slip I used with my wedding dress ever again, so it got repurposed.

And after an afternoon of sewing, (some ripping), and pressing, I had masks! I sewed six of them, but I took pictures of these when I was packing them up to send to Ryan.

I'll be wearing my own new favorite mask when I go to the post office tomorrow. You can't see it, but this mask makes me smile!

I finished a wonderful book last week, Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey. If you are interested in World War I, historical fiction, homing pigeons, or just a really well-told story, I highly recommend this book. I'm also reading Real Life, The Women of Brewster Place, and Keep Moving, but I'm still in the midst of a book hangover from Cher Ami, so I haven't made much progress with any of them.

What are you making and reading this week?

  1. Your sewing set up is DARLING! What a cute machine and I love its console.

How clever to repurpose the slip from your wedding gown!

    1. The sewing machine is heavy and definitely not portable, but all the parts are metal and it works like a champ. I think I'm going to have to replace a belt soon because I have to do some finagling to wind bobbins, but for now it just keeps on sewing!

  2. I have my mother's old singer too! I think she got it as a graduation gift so 1957? Maybe. Love the turtle fabric :)

  3. Love your masks Bonny! They are PERFECT! Great idea to repurpose your slip. I think I've requested the Cher Ami book from my library - I need to re look and see if I have.

  4. I am smiling at your mask as well! That fabric is brilliant! :)

I am with you on a book hangover as well... it definitely colors what you read next! (and I should have Cher Ami soon!)

  5. Love that mask, Bonny! I am trying to read the Women of Brewster Place, but I admit I am having trouble getting into it. I think I am in a bit of a reading slump. It's been really busy around here trying to get house maintenance done, so no knitting or reading going on. Boo! Yesterday it was toilet flapper valves, garage doors that would not go up, handles falling off said doors, a general flurry of things falling apart. It's true, the center will not hold - LOL. Have a great Wednesday, Bonny!

  6. Your singer machine is a gem, to be sure! I need to get some new masks made, since we are in this for the long haul. I think I try masks like your's this time. Things are looking a little better here, snow in forecast this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.

  7. Your mask makes me smile so much -- I love the juxtaposition of the swears with the pretty flowers! What are you using for the straps, if I may ask? It looks like t-shirt material.

  8. My mom's sewing machine when I was young was in a case like that. I've often thought of it when I have to haul my machine out of a closet and set it up on a table. I miss that case!

Applause for re-using fabric you had in the house... and of course I love your perfect 2020 fabric choice.

  9. BEST fabric, Bonny! I love it! And now you may have just given me the kick-in-the-butt I need . . . to go sew my own stack of masks down on my sewing table. (I think there are 6, but maybe 8. And I KNOW I've already cut the lining. . . so, bonus! ) (I'm using old flannel pillowcases for my linings.)

  11. Oh that fabric! I don't know if I'd dare to wear it but I sure do love it! I need to sew some new masks, too. My studio is very hot all summer so I used that as an excuse but it's not hot up there anymore and I need to get cracking.

  12. I have MY old Singer machine -it's in the basement, having been usurped by a newer, different machine in 2007? I love the masks - especially the one you plan to wear to the PO! Making a statement,R Ya! You Go Girl. Have made a note to read Cher Ami... I'm waiting for some fun fabric to arrive, any day now for more Masks. Cheers~

  13. Those masks would make me smile while I was wearing them ... and I'm guessing at least a few people who saw them would be smiling too! and yay for recycling something you'll never wear again. (even if it seems precious, it's not - and your sons will appreciate that, too!)

  14. Made a cat bed out of an old sweater. I'm not really done with it yet....but it is getting there. I love how you recycle!

  16. That is a great looking mask and imagining your smile is the best. Hang on to that old Singer. I bet it has metal (instead of plastic) parts. That sewing console looks similar to one my grandmother had in her sewing room - with a Singer machine. I suppose I should make a few more masks too. I made the kind with pleats but these contour masks look more comfortable to me.
