Sometimes Monday ...

... means a cascade of changes.

When we bought our house in NJ 30 years ago, the elderly woman we bought it from left a lot of stuff here. This was initially quite a shock during the walk-through, but we elected to go ahead with the closing. I spent almost a month getting rid of things we didn't want (like horsehair mattresses!), but we did keep a lot of the left-behind furniture.

Among this was a bedroom set in what eventually became Justin's room. The triple dresser, tall chest, headboard, and footboard were functional, usable, and Justin didn't object to them. We also kept the mattress that had been left; it wasn't horsehair but was relatively comfortable so it stayed.

Years passed, Justin left for college, then a ranch in Texas, eventually landing in upstate New York. For many good reasons, he has given notice at his current job and will be moving back home while he figures out what is next. He asked several months ago if he could get a new mattress. We decided that since he's slept on it for the past 30 years and who knows how old the mattress was before we inherited it, it was definitely time. We did have to pay a bit more than $59.50 for the new one.

The new mattress was delivered on Saturday while Justin was unloading tubs from his NY house, so this is what my house looked like for much of the weekend.

Yes, that's a fence post with barbed wire. I'm not exactly sure what it's for, but I'm sure Justin will use it for some important project.

Justin has headed back to NY for his final week of work and to pack and bring more stuff home. I'm not sure where it will all go, but hopefully, the dining room won't be the final destination.

We did get the new bed set up, while the old headboard waits on the landing to see if it can be used.

I have to remind myself that I'm usually only here in NJ on weekends, so the stacks of tubs and stuff shouldn't really bother me. I'm sure it will all get sorted out in time, and it will be nice to have Justin home for a while.

I think several of you have contemplated getting a new mattress, but it does seem like a big deal with lots to consider. You can now tell yourself that "hey, at least I didn't procrastinate for 30 years like Bonny did!"

  1. Ha! We got a new mattress back in September, and I was thinking we were overdue because we'd had it since before we got engaged (I requested the mattress as a 12th wedding anniversary gift). I guess they really don't make anything like they used to!

  2. Isn't it nice to be able to "be a landing spot" for our adult children should they need it? I am most intrigued by the fence post and barbed wire too! And hurrah for a new mattress but I am laughing at that price tag!

  3. That price tag! They don't make things like they used to -- and they certainly don't cost like they used to. When Fletch and I finally replaced our double bed with a queen sized bed a few years back, the double bed box springs and mattress were ones I had bought when I graduated from college (and they really were still in ok shape!).

Welcome home to Justin! Maybe you can get a little archery target shooting in with him???

  5. Change is good! I have never minded my kids popping back & forth/in & out, if needed. I like them, and it's nice to have them around.

I love how that price tag is stitched onto the mattress. And that's a gorgeous headboard! Is there a footboard to match?

  6. That new bed looks comfortable! I remember the old chain embroidery machines that could write your name on anything you needed (like gym clothes). Here's good thoughts to Justin as he looks for the next opportunity. Leaving the status quo can be hard part and he's made that step into his new future.

  8. How exciting for him to be back to you if only on the weekends. Loved the price of the original mattress, those were the days but I bet it was expensive then.

  9. New mattress = Sticker shock! But considering one doesn’t buy every year or decade, even, guess it’s OK. Welcome home to Justin. Enjoy your time together, again.
    Cheers

  10. Oh, that's a major change for you all - the mattress and the move home! I'm sure you will adjust quickly and hopefully all those bins will be unpacked the next time you head back to NJ!

  11. All this moving stuff in and around must mean you are feeling better? I hope so. Justin's refurbished room is shaping up. Enjoy your time with him. I really enjoy having adult children these days. And the mattress price - oh my. I'd say it was worth you and the previous owner got your money's worth.

  12. He slept on that mattress for how long??? Wow, I am impressed. But he has now slept on lots of beds, and I imagine his taste is more discerning. I hope you all adjust quickly to your new arrangements and enjoy the changes. I hope he finds what he is looking for and feels good about his decision.

  13. Ummmm. Actually we did procrastinate about our new mattress for ALMOST 30 years!!!! We just bought a new one this week -- and slept on it for the first time last night. We got our old one just days before Brian was born . . . 28 years ago last week. (And until last night, we actually thought that old mattress was comfortable!) Good for Justin for stepping back and taking some time to discover . . . what next. XO

  14. New mattresses all around! Smokey just ditched his 35+ years-old mattress for one we inherited from his mom, only 2+ years old. My friend Colleen just bought a new one -- on sale, it was last year's model of the one they initially picked our -- score! And Elder Son and GF recently got a new one, too. Best of luck to Justin. It is good to take an occasional break to sit back and think about things.
