Three on Thursday

It's cold (really uncomfortable, bone-chilling, record-setting cold) over much of the country, so here are Three Ways You Can See Just How Cold It Is.

 A Frozen-Over Fountain

I'm not sure why they don't turn off the water (maybe the pipes would freeze?) but even the tiny little spray that is still working makes for some interesting ice accretions.

Ice on the Cliffs

These are the Palisades rock formations along the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River. They're impressive enough at almost any time of year, but even more so when they become encased in ice. The really crazy thing is that people choose to ice-climb here. I saw some climbers walking along River Road when I was driving past, but had someplace to be so I couldn't stop and watch. It might also have been a little nerve-racking.

Ice on the River

I love seeing the beginning of ice formation on the Delaware River. It starts as "scab ice" (that's what everyone around here calls it) forming on the rocks in the river bed where it's colder than the surface. Eventually this ice floats up and the smaller pieces come together loosely into ice islands.

They are carried by the current, pushed to the banks by the wind, and gather on the bridge supports. I think it's beautiful, and the ice even has a voice of its own - a kind of gentle shushing as the river flows by.

Even winter's cold has a lovely beauty of its own!

Head on over here to read more Three on Thursday posts.

  1. Very pretty pictures Bonny. Winter can be gorgeous. We have a fountain at the backside of my office, but it is turned off by October and won't be turned on again until Spring. The "pond" it sits in periodically ices over. And, I remember driving to Vermont in the winter with my family and there was a hotel in Albany (I think...or Troy) that had a fountain outside. It was always turned on and huge mounds of ice would form. They had different colored lights shining on it and I thought it was the most beautiful thing!

Hope you are staying warm and inside! It's a fine day for knitting.

  3. I agree with you completely. The images of the confluence on Twitter yesterday were stunning. We also had a downspout break in this cold weather and it's ice formations are quite beautiful as well. However, fixing this is #1 on our to do list this weekend!

  4. Beautiful pics! I love seeing nature's art that can emerge from the "bad" weather - a reminder to find the good in everything. :)

  5. Love your description of the ice formation. I was thinking about how that happens when we were driving home along Lake Huron on Tuesday.

  6. I love these photos! I find ice fascinating when it is not under my feet. It can really be beautiful.

Right now, we don't have much accumulation in Philadelphia, but oh is it treacherous out there! Walking was horrible, I cannot imagine trying to drive in it.

  8. Thank you for sharing the lovely photos! It's cold on the Illinois prairie too and there is a kind of stark beauty, but not as beautiful as the Delaware!

  9. That photo of the Palisades is gorgeous! Yes, ice is VERY interesting. But, I am very glad that I don't have to be out in it today.

  10. Your photos remind me of what cold really is. Days in the 40s and 50s just are not winter-like. It's a good thing you have wool and knits to keep you warm!

    1. I hope warmer weather returns to you soon! I shoveled all afternoon in -20 degree windchills but am now totally deserving of all the warm coziness and knitting I'm enjoying this evening, with our coldest temperatures still to arrive over the weekend. Stay warm!
