On (Not In)

Last week Vicki told us about the exciting delivery of her new refrigerator, and shared what she had chosen to display on the refrigerator. Along with checking out friends' bookshelves, I'm always interested to see what people have on their refrigerator doors. Our refrigerator is the no-frills, basic type, but it's the only one that would fit between a supporting beam and an existing cabinet. It still provides plenty of space for all the stuff of life that I like to see on a daily basis.

This is the side I see most often, so it has the calendar for what's going on, my Romney Ridge calendar for sheep, fortunes, appointment cards, and magnetic boxes to file things for each of the boys. This started as a way to keep all those school papers straight, but they're still useful even though they no longer live here.

Also a magnet from Kym, and a quote I liked so much that I had to cut it out of a catalog.

The front is full of photos and some other things that make me smile, laugh, and remember.

Here's a closer look at my favorite card from my sister-in-law, magnetic poetry composed by Justin, and note paper from the Studley hotel. John stayed here when he was in North Yorkshire, UK for business and I thought it was a hilarious name. Also, November has been declared Bonny Becker Month!

Justin did experience a little confusion between Santa and Gandalf when he was around six, so my other sister-in-law cut this out for me.

A closeup of photos (and people) I love.

The bottom section has loads of photos from all stages of the kids' lives. It used to be filled with drawings from the boys, but neither one of them has drawn anything in years. I miss that artwork (but of course I've saved most of it).

I don't look at the far side quite as often, but it's also got some favorite photos and a 16-year-old newspaper clipping. Eleven students in our school district lost a parent in the World Trade Center on 9/11, and "Patriots for Peace" is a student drawing that was part of a fundraiser for a scholarship fund for those students. I can't bear to throw it away.

Thanks for visiting my kitchen, and Happy Bonny Becker Month!

  1. Oh kitchens, they are so needed. Mine is small, workable, and the fridge is adorned like yours though less so. It has photos, newspaper clippings, jokes on magnets, kid's art sent to grandma/me but the most important thing . . . the grocery list!

    1. You're so right about the grocery list! Mine is also usually there on the refrigerator, but I had just been to the grocery store and hadn't started a new list yet. I've tried to tell John that the list is right there on the refrigerator so he can write things down as he uses them, but I haven't had much luck with that in 36 years.

  2. Bonny Becker Month sounds like a fine idea to me! I keep my fridge photo and magnet free as I find it distracting but I love seeing how other people decorate them!

  3. How fun. I guess we can learn a lot by looking at our fridge doors. We have recently added some fridge magnets for the tiny person. He loves to pull them off as he practices his standing skills.

  4. Your refrigerator holds a history of your family! There is so much there and it's all (mostly) joyful. I know who gave me every single magnet on my fridge, too. When I take time to see what's there it all brings me joy, too. Bonnie Becker Month is worthy of celebration!

  5. Our fridge is pretty full and not nearly as neat as yours! And here's to Bonny Becker Month! Let the celebrating continue! :-)

  6. Thanks for sharing your refrigerator-gallery! Mine displays lots of magnets that have been give to me by family & friends over the years and I love looking at them and remembering. I hope you are having a wonderful Bonny Becker Month!

  7. Happy Bonny Becker Month (too funny). Let the celebrations begin/continue. Our frig has stuff across the front of the freezer (our frig is like yours) and the only thing I've noticed recently is how filthy the whole thing is. I really do need to scrub it down. I do love seeing pictures and art work on others' frigs (almost like peeking into a medicine cabinet - lol).

  8. Happy Bonny Becker Month! Too bad this month does not involve getting out of all things domestic that you don't want to do. Shouldn't Bonny Becker Month include that perk? Alas, my frig is stainless steel so nothing magnetic will stick to the front of it. It was a shock to find that out after it was delivered. One side is covered by a wall, and the other side is almost completely covered by a cabinet. So I have had to severely pare down what is there, and it includes the basics and a few whimsical things I need to see. Your frig is truly a monument to your life, Bonny! And that's a good thing!

    1. Oh, no! I guess I won't ever be happy with a stainless steel frig (unless I used tape, Command strips or figured out something else). And you have a perfect understanding of how Bonny Becker Month should be celebrated! I'm not sure my family has gotten the word that it's my month, but maybe they are saving the celebration until the end. :-)

  9. I love a busy refrigerator. I read the one at my nieces house all the time. it is a fraction of their lives!

  10. Thanks for the refrigerator tour. We have an old style fridge too and white. I hope it keeps going awhile longer. My favorite is the quote "I knit so I won't kill people."

  11. Happy Bonny Becker Month! and thank you for the tour ... what a wonderful mix of things to spark joy and happy memories. My fridge is stainless steel (like some other commenters) so the front is bare, but the sides are magnetic. I have a very tightly curated collection of little boy things (invitations, drawings and one photo) displayed ... maybe I'll share!

  12. Wow, I like it :) Mine is brushed steel or something that is not magnetic (only the sides) so my frig is boring and plain. I miss the art work I used to display :)
