Unraveled Wednesday

Joining Kat and friends for Unraveled Wednesday.

I'm still knitting my Birthday Cake Hitchhiker, but it's almost time to start on the second skein. I like my hitchhikers with lots of teeth and plenty long so I can wrap them twice around my neck, so I almost always use a second skein. The excitement continues ...

I'm still reading for Book Bingo, and have finished Whispers Under Ground, and started the next book in the series, Broken Homes. I've become quite attached to a character in the series, Lesley, and I have to see what direction she is headed in. I'm also reading The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets. It may sound like a crazy title, but it turns out that many of the show's writers have mathematical backgrounds and have written plenty of math into the show. Ryan has given a talk on math in the Simpsons and Futurama for entering grad students over the past three years, so I may need to ask for his slides and notes in an effort to make the topic more engrossing. It's an interesting book so far, just not the kind of compelling reading that I'm looking for at the end of the day.

Carole and some other goodreads friends have read Grief Cottage, and it felt like just the kind of book I was in the mood for after I read the Amazon sample. I bought it on the spur of the moment and have been staying up too late to read it on my Fire; it is the kind of compelling book with that I'm looking for at the end of the day. I think I'm going to use it in the "That you want to read because of the cover" square on my Book Bingo card. The cover is dark and captivating, and makes an intriguing comparison with the large print cover on the right.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. Thank you for the recommendation - I am adding Grief Cottage to my "read list"! And, Birthday Cake yarn has also gone onto my wish list! I love how that Hitchhiker is looking!

  2. I have read her books and she is a fantastic writer, I would love to read that one, one day. Your hitchhiker is looking mighty pretty and squishy :)

  3. Yes, your Hitchhiker is looking great! I haven't read anything by Gail Godwin in years, but Grief Cottage sounds very good. The math book cracks me up -- who would have known that the writers have that background - that may explain why Colin enjoyed that show and Futurama (among others)!

  4. I'm reading (and hopefully finishing today) The Man in the High Castle and I kind of hate it. Just not my thing. And I'm knitting (and never finishing, at the rate I'm going) a baby blanket.

  5. Grief Cottage looks like a good one! I'm reading A Wrinkle in Time for the fantasy bingo square and am enjoying it. I remember enjoying L'engle's Meet the Austins, but never read other books by her until I read her Crosswicks Journals as an adult. I'm still knitting away on my TTL mystery shawl.

  6. I wonder if Doug would mind if I didn't do anything with him on our August vacation and just stayed in and read the entire time? :-) I've been eyeing Grief Cottage too. I love your Hitchhiker!!!

    1. I'm only about one third into Grief Cottage, but I love the characters and it's fitting my reading mood perfectly. I've never read Gail Godwin before, but I think I'll be trying more of her backlist after I finish this one.

  9. I always love to see the ball of yarn get smaller; it's a sure sign of forward progress! I read a few of Gail Godwin's books years ago (now I can't even recall the titles), so thank you for that recommendation (gah! how did I miss Carole's glowing review??!!)

  10. I've got a hitchhiker on the needles also. Good travel knitting. I have read other books by Gail Godwin so I may see if my library has this one. Sometimes the cover of newly published fiction just grabs and pulls me into the book. The cover made me read this. . . category.

    1. I think Hitchhiker just may be the perfect pattern - easy to remember, easy to customize, and you get a really wearable scarf out of it. This is my first Gail Godwin book, but I'm really enjoying it so far.
