Wednesday is for Wondering ...

Does this look like clown barf?

I don't know whether it was the wool fumes or just the fun of shopping at The Loopy Ewe, but I fell in love with this skein of Meadowcroft Dyeworks Rockshelter Sock yarn.

I thought it was beautiful in the skein, but I loved it a little bit less once I wound it. It seemed destined to be a Hitchhiker, but now that I'm knitting with it I'm really not sure how I feel at all.

When I'm knitting during the day and can admire the lovely saturated colors, I'm quite happy with it. At night, under artificial light, I just think, "Alas, clown barf!" (Clown barf is not a good thing, in my opinion.)

So, a poll:

Does this look like clown barf?

Yes
No
Maybe So
Absolutely! You should definitely quit now and knit something else!
Hmmm ... I'll explain my thoughts in the comments.

Like I say to my family, this isn't a trick question. I'm honestly interested in how other people see this yarn (and maybe a little bit in seeing if I can get this poll to work), so please don't be afraid of insulting me or hurting my feelings. I can't even say that I'll frog this or keep knitting depending on the poll results; I'm just curious about how it looks to other knitters. Thanks in advance for your valued thoughts and opinions!

  1. It does, kinda, but I still like it.

  2. I love all the colors... and the hitchhiker pattern. I picture the FO with a white tee or chambray shirt. I think it will be fun!

  3. I do not think it looks like clown barf at all, in fact - I really love the randomness of the colors. However, if you think it is too much, I think it would be equally stunning as the accent color in Martina Behm's Lefty. Although, I would so wear that Hitchhiker!

  4. I know most people don't like pooling but with colors that bright I always tend towards finding a pattern where the colors pool just a bit. I find that the finished object looks more like the skein I liked when I do that. Otherwise I feel the colors get lost in all the randomness. Good luck deciding.

  5. I think it's pretty and you are focusing too much on the colors. Just keep knitting and hopefully you will love it!!

  6. It isn't clownish, it's bright like flowers. It works with the pattern. The colors may look different in person, so only you will know if it's worth your time.

  7. I think you picked a great pattern for that yarn. I have many (many) skeins that look great in hank form and then get a little barfy looking when wound and then I lose all love for the yarn. Persevere! I think it will end up looking great!

  8. It does, but I also like the way it is knitting up in the scarf. Definitely something to wear with neutral colors to brighten up your day!

  9. I think it wants to be socks. I agree with emcknits. If it pooled a little, you'd get more of the original skein look. I hate it when such a pretty skein looks so vastly different knitted up. Good luck!

  10. I like it better in Hitchhiker form than in skein form, actually. I say keep knitting and postpone the decision until you have more fabric. Remember brights look brighter up close.

  11. Keep knitting! I think it's lovely...my vote!

  12. I am a frequent victim of clown-barf yarn --- stuff that looks so wonderful in the skein, but not so much in fabric. (I think it's because I'm such a sucker for color explosions.) You've chosen a good pattern for that particular skein of clown-barf, though. I imagine socks would pool in Not Attractive, Clown-barfy ways -- but I think the hitchhiker, with its gradual increase, will keep the pools from being too . . . constant. Mary's styling comment is spot on -- this will look great with a denim shirt -- or with just simple white. Knit on. (And if you don't like it in 10 inches or so, let it go!)

  13. I'm generally not a fan of this kind of yarn when knit up compared to how it looks in the skein, and I personally don't like yarn that pools. But I actually do like how it looks right now. The jewel tones are lovely. It's bright, but the colors work well together. I suspect that you'll get some pooling, though, which may or may not bother you. I'd suggest looking at some of the finished hitchhiker projects done with similar yarn, and see if you think you'll be OK with it. If you don't have an issue with the pooling, then I'd say to go for it. If you get to a point where you don't like how it's looking, you can always try something else. A chevron pattern like "Favorite Scarf Ever" is great for yarn like this - Loopy Ewe has a project that was done with the Rockshelter yarn, and I think it's very pretty.

  14. I love it!! I love it as a Hitchhiker too. and I am drawn towards colors that pool. I think this is a good match of yarn and pattern!

  15. If you decided to stop using it for the hitchhiker, you might want to try Vittorio (one I'm making now)...

  16. I agree - the hitchhiker would rock with a white shirt. The colors do look lovely so far. That said - you'll know. Rip it out if you won't wear it!
