Ten on Tuesday - ¡Viva Comida!


Hey, it's slightly better than Taco Bell!

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, this week's Ten on Tuesday topic is 10 Favorite Mexican Foods. You can probably tell from the title of this post that I know next to nothing about Mexican foods. Living in central New Jersey, this is not a surprise. We have several restaurants that serve American versions of Mexican foods, but we don't have access to anything authentic (or very tasty). So, my favorite Mexican foods are:
  1. Burritos
  2. Tacos
  3. All that good stuff Carole posted about here. Even though I haven't tasted any of it, I can tell it would all be delicious from the photos.
A few weeks ago I had a conversation with a friend who recently returned from a sabbatical in Oaxaca, Mexico. When I asked about the food, she admitted that could possibly have been her real reason for going to this region. I told her how little I knew about Mexican cuisine, and she highly recommended these books: 
  1. Authentic Mexican
  2. Mexican Everyday
  3. Rick Bayless' Mexican Kitchen
I have them on hold at the library so I haven't tried any recipes yet. Maybe by next Cinco de Mayo I'll actually be able to come up with 10 favorites!

  2. Living in the west it is impossible to not have Mexican all the time, but there will be nothing as good as the cuisine you explore on your own. Keep us up to date on your explorations and the tasty results!

  3. There are some good Mexican restaurants and grocery stores in New Jersey. I've been really pleasantly surprised at the number that have sprung up in the tri-state area over the last couple of decades. The best ones tend to be tiny little places that you would overlook if you weren't searching for them. I was surprised to have the best tamales of my life at a little hole in the wall in Poughkeepsie when we were in Rhinebeck last year. - Susan

  5. Growing up "out west" (and going to college at the University of Texas) has spoiled me forever when it comes to great Mexican food. Here in Michigan? Not so much! Enjoy exploring a new cuisine! Mmmmm.

  6. I watched some Mexican cooking shows on PBS prior to our vacation in February and learned a bit about Mexican cuisine!

  7. I've seen Rick Bayless on PBS; the food he makes looks delicious. I think you're going to have a lot of fun with your research (and I look forward to next year's post!)
