I did a Bits and Pieces post last month, but since I'm not sure what to write about today, it's time for another one.
Fall may be finally here to stay. We had some thunderstorms on Friday, temperatures dropped 25 degrees, and we had our first frost. John is all ready to turn on the heat, but since I just filled our oil tank at the slightly exorbitant cost of $5.86/gallon, I'm going to be wearing sweaters, putting flannel sheets on the bed, and delaying turning on the heat for as long as possible. Can we make it to Thanksgiving? We'll see!
John has finally listened to my
I got a letter from the president telling me about how hard he has been working for better, more affordable healthcare for people and how he believed in returning money directly into the hands of the American people. I call BS, and I'm also lucky enough that I don't need the $90 and wish he hadn't decided to do this. It hasn't actually shown up yet, but it's possible that it will be there with my Social Security direct deposit next week. But when and if it does show up in my bank account, I'm donating it (plus a bit extra) to someone who needs it more than I do. I haven't decided yet, but I'm considering the library, our local food bank, or possibly Planned Parenthood. Maybe all of them because that might help with my simmering rage.
After chatting with our County Clerk, I decided that voting in-person might possibly be safer than voting by mail. She said she could guarantee that ballots would be sent out but couldn't guarantee that the USPS would deliver them. Voting by mail used to be so nice and easy, but I'll be trying to figure out how to work a voting machine this year. Early voting starts here in NJ on October 24th, but I'll be busy that day.
Next Saturday, October 24th, Justin and Jess will be getting married. It's at a venue in northern PA, Tall Timbers Barn. Justin had very few opinions concerning the wedding but didn't want to get married at a fancy hotel or country club. Weather permitting, the service will be outside, so half of our family has been calling to ask whether they'll be warm enough. I don't know; dress appropriately! I honestly haven't had to do too much for the wedding, but as it gets closer, I'm surprised at the amount of manufactured drama. Weddings seem to bring out the the worst in people (and sometimes the best, too), but I've decided that I'm just going to smile, pay attention, and enjoy myself. I wouldn't mind if you sent good thoughts for a good time and good weather. (Maybe then the family members that want to wear sleeveless dresses won't freeze!)

Beautiful fall pictures! I have to admit that we've already turned on our heat (and turned it off, turned on the AC, and turned on the heat again!) because the house has been very chilly, but we don't use heating oil, so I'm not as aware of the cost. I will say that having two big pots of soup on the stove last weekend helped to warm the first floor of the house, so if you're looking to warm things up, maybe making some soup and baking something sweet could help! I applaud your decision to donate that $90, if indeed it shows up. But wasn't it supposed to be like $5,000?
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the wedding day is almost here! I hope the weather cooperates and it's a beautiful day. I'm sure it'll be special and memorable no matter what.
Gorgeous photos, Bonny! I chuckled at your thoughts on the $90... such idiocy (or Idiocracy? I mean most days seem to be taken directly from the script!) I have been enjoying the arrival of cooler temps. The heat went on here this weekend (no oil furnace here and I am seriously glad about that after reading about the prices! Yikes!) I am sending good thoughts your way about the weather and vocal family members! I think you are wise to tune all that out and focus on the day with Justin and Jess! I bet it will be amazing... whatever the weather! (I have voted already and my ballot is waiting to be counted!!)
ReplyDeleteYour photos are breathtaking, Bonny! I haven't received a letter from the president, and I think I'd faint if he actually sent me any money. Ugh. He's so stupid. I've had my heat on/off a few times now... we had our first frost warning on Friday night, but another lovely week ahead. We still need to change screens/storms, and that will help. (Next weekend!)
ReplyDeleteYour photos today are just stunning! Perhaps John could convince Dale to clean out and sell some things from our garage, too . . . I hope the wedding is perfect and I agree that sometimes the drama around weddings is ridiculous. May there be none of that nonsense for Justin and Jess. And I hope you'll share lots of photos!
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely pictures, Bonny! It has been so dry here that we have no fall color. My tulip poplar is usually a glorious gold color, but not this year. There is also absolutely no rain in the forecast. I don't remember it ever being this dry here. All that to say, thanks for the fall color. I voted on the first day of early voting here. I am sure you will get to it as soon as you can. I am still trying to get my garage cleared out. It's a job I don't enjoy. I hope the wedding has beautiful weather, but even if it doesn't, I hope people remember why they are there - for Justin and Jess.
ReplyDeleteI donated my $90 giving half to World Central Kitchen and half Doctors Without Borders. It was in my account on the 8th of the month but the letter just arrived. I hate the idea they can just go into my bank account without my permission. I felt very violated.
ReplyDeleteDaughter got married 15 years ago on the 15th of October and it was cold and windy that night. Not thinking, I had bought a little sleeveless taffeta dress and sparkly sandals that summer and had to go out that morning and buy a wrap and some pantyhose so I didn't freeze. In spite of all that we had a wonderful time. It's a beautiful time of year for a wedding. Mother Nature did most of the decorating.
I just checked this morning and was surprised to see the $90 actually in my bank account. But I love your idea of World Central Kitchen so that's where mine is going, too.
DeleteI have a long sleeve velvet dress and will wear it with pantyhose, so I think I'll be ready if we end up outdoors. It's comfortable and I look about as good as I can expect. I was surprised at the family members who expected to be comfortable in a sleeveless dress on Oct. 24 outdoors in the Poconos!
What beautiful photos. Your idea to donate the $90 is excellent. I'm going to follow your example. I may give half of mine to Earth Justice, a group that is trying to repair a small bit of the environmental havoc caused by this administration. I wish Justin and Jess every happiness. I wish your family a drama free weekend. I always think that is something doesn't go exactly as planned, it just adds to the story of the celebration.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for the wedding!! yay! We vote in person because it's what we've always done I guess.
ReplyDeleteI am sending ALL the best wishes for good weather, smooth wedding-sailing, and a lovely time for all of you. Enjoy the moment, Bonny. What an exciting time! XO
